How to Choose a Boat Trailer

Getting the right trailer is mostly about weight and length, so work these out before you look at any boat trailer for sale.

Total weight. Add up the boat, the engine, a full fuel tank, batteries and the gear you normally leave aboard. Then add a margin. The trailer's load rating has to cover all of it. A common mistake is using the dry hull weight from the brochure.

Boat length. The trailer should support the hull properly along its length, with the transom sitting over or close to the rear of the bunks or rollers.

Brakes. Heavier trailers need brakes, and many countries require them above a certain weight. Surge brakes work automatically when your car slows down, without wiring to the car.

Single or tandem axle. Tandem axles spread the load, tow more steadily and are safer if a tyre goes flat. They're the norm for bigger boats.

Do I need brakes?

Heavier trailers do, and many countries set a legal weight limit above which brakes are required. The surge brake models handle this without any wiring to your car.
