Mercury 3.5 HP Outboard for Sale: 3.5MH and 3.5MLH
The Mercury 3.5 shares its light, compact design with the Mercury 2.5 but adds a useful bit of extra push. That extra power helps when you have two people and gear in a tender, when you are heading into a breeze, or when you need to cover more distance. It is still easy to carry, and it comes in both short and long shaft versions. Here is every Mercury 3.5 HP outboard for sale in our stock.
Models in Stock
- Mercury 3.5MH: manual start, tiller, 15 inch short shaft.
- Mercury 3.5MLH: manual start, tiller, 20 inch long shaft.
M means manual start, L means long shaft and H means tiller handle. Without an L, the motor has the 15 inch short shaft.
2.5 or 3.5?
The two motors weigh almost the same. If your boat is rated for 3.5 HP or more, the 3.5 gives you more margin for loads, wind and current for very little extra weight. The Mercury 2.5 makes sense if you only need the bare minimum or your boat is rated for 2.5 HP.
Who Buys a Mercury 3.5?
- Yacht owners with 2.3 to 2.7 metre tenders who often carry two people.
- Small sailboat and day sailer owners who need an auxiliary; the long shaft 3.5MLH is ideal.
- Canoe and small boat owners on lakes and rivers.
- Anglers who want a quiet, light motor for small waters.
Features
Light and easy to carry
A built in carry handle and compact design make it easy for one person to handle.
Built in fuel tank
An integrated tank keeps the motor self contained, ideal for short trips.
Four stroke efficiency
No oil mixing, low fuel use and a quiet, smoke free run.
Long shaft option
The 3.5MLH puts the prop deeper, which helps on sailboats and transom brackets where a short shaft would ventilate in waves.
Short or Long Shaft?
Measure from the top of the transom or bracket to the bottom of the hull. Around 15 inches calls for the 3.5MH. Around 20 inches calls for the 3.5MLH. On sailboats, the long shaft is usually the better choice even if the measurement is in between, because the stern rises and falls under way.
Using the 3.5 on a Sailboat
Mount the motor on a sturdy adjustable bracket, set so the anti ventilation plate sits a few inches below the waterline when the motor is lowered. Tilt it fully clear of the water while sailing to reduce drag and protect it from marine growth. Fit a safety lanyard and close the fuel vent when the motor is tilted up.
Care Tips
- Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
- Check oil before each outing and change it at the recommended interval.
- Use fresh fuel, and drain or stabilise it before storage.
- Store and carry the motor on the side shown in the owner's manual.
