Why Choose a Suzuki Outboard?

Fuel efficiency

Many Suzuki four strokes use Lean Burn Control, which adjusts the fuel and air mixture to the engine's load. At cruising speeds the engine runs leaner, so you use less fuel and cover more distance on every tank.

Compact, offset design

On many models Suzuki offsets the driveshaft from the crankshaft. That moves weight forward, makes the powerhead more compact and helps place the gear case lower in the water for better grip.

Smooth, quiet four stroke running

Suzuki's modern four strokes are known for low vibration and a quiet idle, which makes trolling and long runs more comfortable.

Corrosion protection

Suzuki applies a dedicated anti corrosion finish to protect aluminium parts exposed to salt water, an important point for coastal boaters.

Advanced flagship technology

The DF350A introduced Suzuki's dual counter rotating propeller system, which puts two props on one gear case for strong grip, acceleration and straight tracking. Larger Suzukis also offer drive by wire controls, known as Suzuki Precision Control, for smooth, cable free shifting and throttle.

How to Read a Suzuki Model Code

Every Suzuki outboard motor for sale on our site is listed with its full model code. Understanding the letters helps you choose the right version.

Letter or partMeaning
DFSuzuki four stroke outboard
NumberHorsepower, for example DF150 is 150 HP
A, BGeneration of that horsepower model
TPower trim and tilt (remote control on small motors)
HTiller handle
EElectric start on smaller motors
SShort shaft, 15 in
LLong shaft, 20 in
XExtra long shaft, 25 in
XXUltra long shaft, 30 in
ZCounter rotation, for the second engine in a twin installation
WWhite cowl rather than the standard grey
Final digitProduction series

For example, a DF200ATXZW2 is a 200 HP A generation four stroke with power trim, a 25 inch shaft, counter rotation, a white cowl and production series 2. Each product page explains its own code in detail.

Choosing the Right Shaft Length

Shaft length is the most common mistake buyers make, and it matters more than many expect. The shaft must put the engine's anti ventilation plate roughly level with the bottom of the boat's hull, or slightly below it. Too short, and the propeller draws air and loses grip. Too long, and the gear case drags, adding resistance and spray.

  1. Measure your transom height from the top of the transom, where the engine clamps or bolts on, straight down to the bottom of the hull at the center line.
  2. About 15 in means a short shaft (S).
  3. About 20 in means a long shaft (L).
  4. About 25 in means an extra long shaft (X).
  5. About 30 in means an ultra long shaft (XX), usually on large offshore boats.

Sailboats with high brackets, and boats with jack plates or setbacks, may need a different length. If you are unsure, send us your transom measurement and boat details, and we will help you choose the right Suzuki outboard motor for sale.

Choosing the Right Horsepower

Start with your boat's capacity plate, which shows the maximum horsepower and weight the hull is rated for. Never exceed it. Within that limit, think about how you use the boat:

  • Displacement and trolling: tenders, sailboats and kicker motors need modest power, often 2.5 to 9.9 HP.
  • Light planing boats: small aluminium boats and inflatables plane well with 15 to 30 HP.
  • Family and fishing boats: 16 to 20 foot boats usually run 60 to 150 HP, depending on weight and load.
  • Offshore and heavy boats: large centre consoles and cruisers need 200 HP and up, often in twin or triple setups.

A boat that is underpowered struggles to plane with a full load and burns more fuel running at high throttle. A well matched engine reaches cruising speed easily and runs efficiently in its sweet spot.

Tiller or Remote Control?

Suzuki portables and many mid range models come with a tiller handle, where you steer, shift and throttle from the engine itself. Tillers are simple, light and leave the deck clear, which many anglers prefer. Larger motors are remote controlled from a helm or console, with a steering system and a control box. Remote motors need extra parts such as cables or drive by wire controls, a key switch and gauges. Our product pages list which parts are included and which are sold separately.

Single or Twin Engines

Twin engine installations use one standard rotation engine and one counter rotation engine, marked Z in the Suzuki model code. Counter rotation balances propeller torque, so the boat tracks straight. If you are repowering a twin setup, check which side each engine sits on and order one standard and one counter rotation unit.

Running In a New Suzuki

New four stroke outboards need a short break in period to bed in the moving parts. Follow the owner's manual, but as a general guide:

  • Run at low to moderate throttle for the first hours, varying the speed.
  • Avoid long periods at full throttle until break in is complete.
  • Check oil level before every trip.
  • Have the first service carried out at the interval in the manual.

Maintaining Your Suzuki Outboard

  • Flush the cooling system with fresh water after every salt water trip.
  • Change engine oil and filter at the intervals in the manual.
  • Replace gear oil, check the water pump impeller and inspect anodes on schedule.
  • Use fresh, good quality fuel, and treat it if the engine will sit for weeks.
  • Grease steering and tilt points regularly.
  • Winterize properly in cold climates.

Regular care keeps a Suzuki running for many years and protects its resale value.
