Honda 5 HP Outboard for Sale: The BF5

The Honda BF5 is a compact, water cooled single cylinder four stroke that gives tender and small boat owners a meaningful step up from the air cooled BF2.3. It adds a proper gearshift and more power while staying light enough for one person to carry. Here is every Honda 5 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

BF5 Models in Stock

BF is Honda four stroke, 5 the horsepower, D the generation, H tiller and S or L the shaft length.

Who Is the BF5 For?

  • Yacht tender owners who often carry two or three people.
  • Inflatable owners with 2.4 to 3 metre boats.
  • Small sailboat and day sailer owners, using the long shaft.
  • Anglers who want a quiet, economical motor for small boats.

Why Choose the BF5?

Forward, neutral and reverse

A proper gearshift makes docking and manoeuvring around a yacht far easier than on the BF2.3.

Water cooling

Water cooling keeps the BF5 quieter than an air cooled motor and helps it run cool under heavier loads.

Fuel flexibility

Run from the built in tank for short trips. Many Honda portables can also connect to an external tank; check the product page for details.

Honda quality

Honda's small four strokes have an excellent reputation for starting easily and running for years with basic care.

Short or Long Shaft?

Measure your transom from the top to the bottom of the hull. Around 15 inches calls for the short shaft (S), typical of inflatables and dinghies. Around 20 inches calls for the long shaft (L), typical of sailboats and brackets.

BF2.3, BF5 or BF8?

Choose the BF2.3 if minimum weight and simplicity matter most. Choose the BF5 for a good balance of weight, power and features. Choose the BF8 if you want twin cylinder smoothness and more power for heavier boats.

Using the BF5 on a Tender

Clamp the motor centrally, tighten the clamp screws firmly and fit a safety lanyard. Set the tilt pin so the shaft is vertical when the boat is loaded and moving. Close the fuel vent when the motor is not in use, and carry it on the side shown in the manual.

Care Tips

  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
  • Check oil before every trip and change it at the recommended interval.
  • Inspect the water pump impeller, anode and spark plug.
  • Drain or stabilise fuel before storage.

Getting the Best Fuel Economy

On tenders and small sailboats, running at about three quarters throttle gives nearly the same speed as full throttle with much lower fuel use and noise. That stretches the range of the built in tank and makes trips ashore more pleasant.
