Yamaha 6 HP Outboard for Sale: The F6

The Yamaha F6 is the top of Yamaha's single cylinder portable range and a favourite with tender owners who want a little more go. It shares its compact body with the F4 and F5, so it stays easy to carry, but the extra power lets a lightly loaded inflatable get up and plane and helps heavier tenders push through wind and chop. Here is every Yamaha 6 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

Who Buys a Yamaha 6 HP?

  • Yacht tender owners who want quicker trips ashore with crew and shopping.
  • Inflatable owners with boats of about 2.7 to 3.2 metres who want to plane with one person.
  • Small sailboat owners who need a reliable auxiliary; the long shaft F6LMHA is the usual pick.
  • Anglers who want a quiet, light motor for small boats and lakes.

Why the F6 Is So Popular

Best power in a carryable package

Six horsepower is about the most you can get before motors become noticeably heavier. For many owners, the F6 hits the perfect balance between performance and portability.

Proper gearshift

The F6 has forward, neutral and reverse, which makes docking, coming alongside a yacht and anchoring much easier than on gearless micro motors.

Fuel flexibility

Use the built in tank for short hops, or connect an external tank for longer trips where the model allows. Check the product page for details.

Yamaha durability

Yamaha portables are common in charter fleets and sailing schools because they keep running under heavy use with simple maintenance.

Short or Long Shaft?

Measure your transom from the top to the bottom of the hull. About 15 inches calls for the short shaft (S), which fits most inflatables and dinghies. About 20 inches calls for the long shaft (L), typical of sailboats and outboard brackets. On a sailboat, a long shaft keeps the prop submerged as the stern lifts in waves.

6 HP or 8 HP?

The Yamaha 8 HP moves to a twin cylinder engine with more power but more weight. If you will carry the motor regularly, the F6 is usually the better choice. If it will stay mounted on a heavier boat, the 8 HP may suit you better.

Looking After Your F6

  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use and check the cooling water stream every time you start.
  • Change the engine oil and gear oil at the intervals in the owner's manual.
  • Inspect the propeller, anode and spark plug regularly.
  • Drain or stabilise fuel before storage and store the motor on the correct side.
