Torqeedo Electric Motors for Sale: The Complete Buying Guide

Torqeedo was founded in Germany in 2005 with a simple idea: build electric boat motors that are efficient and practical enough to replace small petrol outboards. Today it is one of the best known names in electric boating, with motors on kayaks, yacht tenders, sailboats, fishing boats and passenger boats around the world. A Torqeedo starts instantly and silently, produces no exhaust, needs no fuel or oil changes and can be carried in a car boot. On this page you can browse every Torqeedo electric motor for sale in our stock and use this guide to choose the right motor, battery and setup for your boat.

The Torqeedo Range in Our Stock

Ultralight 403: for kayaks and canoes

The Ultralight is designed for kayaks, canoes and very small boats. It mounts on the side or stern, weighs very little and runs from a compact lithium battery, so you can cover long distances without paddling or fish all day with hands free propulsion. We stock the Ultralight 403A with 320 Wh battery and the Ultralight 403AC with 915 Wh battery for longer range.

Travel 603 and 1103: for tenders, dinghies and small sailboats

The Travel series is Torqeedo's best known product. These portable tiller motors have the battery built into the top of the shaft, so there is no separate tank or cable to manage. The Travel 1103 is roughly comparable to a 3 HP petrol outboard in pushing power, which makes it ideal for yacht tenders, inflatables, small fishing boats and small sailboats. The motor breaks down into light pieces for carrying, and the tiller display shows battery level and remaining range using built in GPS. We stock the Travel 603 S, Travel 1103 CS and Travel 1103 CL.

Cruise 3.0 and 6.0 outboards: for sailboats and small motorboats

The Cruise series steps up to higher power for heavier boats. The Cruise 3.0 is broadly comparable to a 6 HP petrol outboard, while the Cruise 6.0 is broadly comparable to a 9.9 HP. They run from separate high capacity lithium batteries, and are available as tiller (T) or remote (R) versions, with short (S) or long (L) shafts. Browse the Cruise 3.0 TS, Cruise 3.0 TL, Cruise 6.0 TL and Cruise 6.0 RL.

Cruise fixed pod drives: for sailboats and displacement boats

Fixed pod (FP) versions mount the motor in a pod under the hull, much like a saildrive, with the controls at the helm. They are a popular way to convert a sailboat or launch from a diesel inboard to electric power, freeing space and removing fuel and exhaust from the boat. We stock the Cruise 3.0 FP, Cruise 6.0 FP and Cruise 12.0 FP for larger boats.

Why Choose an Electric Outboard?

Silent running

An electric motor makes almost no noise. You can talk normally, hear wildlife and approach fish or anchorages without disturbing anyone. Many sailors say it changes how they enjoy the water.

No fuel, no fumes

There is no petrol to store, spill or go stale, and no exhaust smell on board. This is a big advantage on tenders carried on yachts, on boats kept in garages and on lakes where combustion engines are restricted or banned.

Instant, reliable starting

Turn the tiller or push the throttle and the motor responds. There is no choke, no pull cord and no flooding, which makes Torqeedo motors easy for anyone on board to use.

Very low maintenance

An electric motor has no spark plugs, oil, filters, water pump or fuel system to service. Routine care is mostly rinsing with fresh water, checking connections and looking after the battery.

Low running cost

Charging a battery costs far less than filling a tank with petrol, and you avoid most of the service costs of a combustion engine.

Understanding Power: Watts vs Horsepower

Electric motors are rated in watts or kilowatts, which makes them hard to compare with petrol outboards. A Torqeedo uses its power very efficiently and delivers strong thrust at low speeds, so it can often replace a petrol motor with a higher horsepower figure on paper. As a rough guide, the Travel 1103 does the job of about a 3 HP petrol motor, the Cruise 3.0 about 6 HP and the Cruise 6.0 about 9.9 HP. Electric motors work best on displacement boats and at moderate speeds. If you need to plane a boat at high speed for long distances, a petrol outboard may still be the better choice.

Battery and Range

Range is the most important question with any electric boat, and it depends on three things: battery capacity, boat weight and speed. Battery capacity is measured in watt hours (Wh). The more watt hours, the longer you can run. Speed has a huge effect: at slow cruising speeds a Torqeedo can run for many hours, while at full throttle the same battery empties much faster. Slowing down by just a knot or two can double your range on many boats.

  • Ultralight: 320 Wh or 915 Wh batteries, enough for long kayak trips at moderate speed.
  • Travel: integrated batteries, with 915 Wh on the Travel 1103 models, plus optional spare batteries.
  • Cruise: separate lithium batteries sized to your needs, often connected in pairs or banks for longer range.

The GPS based range display on many Torqeedo motors shows how far you can go at your current speed, which makes planning easy. If you tell us your boat and typical trips, we can help you estimate the battery capacity you need.

Charging Options

Torqeedo batteries can be charged from shore power with a charger, and many systems can also be topped up from solar panels or, on larger boats, from other on board charging sources. Sailors who spend time at anchor often combine a Travel or Cruise motor with a solar panel so they can recharge during the day. Check each product page for the charger supplied and the options available.

Choosing the Right Shaft Length

As with petrol outboards, the propeller must sit deep enough to stay in clean water. On tenders and small motorboats, a short shaft usually suits transoms of about 15 inches. On sailboats with high transoms or brackets, a long shaft is usually the better choice so the propeller stays submerged as the boat pitches. Measure from the mounting point to the bottom of the hull, or send us the details and we will help you choose the right Torqeedo electric motor for sale.

Which Torqeedo Is Right for You?

  • Kayak or canoe: Ultralight 403.
  • Yacht tender or small inflatable: Travel 603 or Travel 1103.
  • Small sailboat, day sailer or light fishing boat: Travel 1103 or Cruise 3.0.
  • Larger sailboat or small motorboat: Cruise 6.0 outboard.
  • Repowering a sailboat or launch from an inboard: Cruise fixed pod, from 3.0 to 12.0 depending on boat size.

Converting a Sailboat From Diesel to Electric

A growing number of sailors are replacing tired diesel inboards with a Torqeedo Cruise pod. The appeal is easy to understand: no diesel smell below deck, no fuel tank, no exhaust, no raw water cooling system and almost no engine maintenance. The space freed up by the old engine and tank can be used for batteries or storage. A conversion does need planning, though. You will need to choose the right pod power for the boat's length and weight, decide how much battery capacity you want, plan the battery location to keep the boat balanced, and think about how you will charge, whether from shore power, solar panels or other sources. Many sailors find that they motor much less than they expected, mostly in and out of harbour, which makes electric power a very good fit. Send us your boat's length, displacement and how you use it, and we can suggest a sensible starting point.

Electric Motors for Fishing

Anglers love electric motors for the same reason sailors do: silence. A Torqeedo lets you move between spots and hold position without the noise and vibration of a petrol engine, which can make a real difference when fish are wary. On kayaks, the Ultralight frees your hands for casting and lets you cover more water before you tire. On small boats, a Travel or Cruise motor can serve as a quiet trolling motor or as the main engine on lakes where petrol motors are not allowed.

Lakes and Waters With Engine Restrictions

Many lakes, reservoirs and protected waters restrict or ban combustion engines to protect drinking water, wildlife and peace and quiet. Electric motors are often allowed where petrol is not, which opens up waters you could not otherwise use with a motor. Rules vary by location and sometimes by motor power, so check the local regulations before you buy.

Looking After Your Torqeedo

  • Rinse the motor with fresh water after use in salt water.
  • Keep electrical connectors clean and dry, and close their covers when not in use.
  • Store lithium batteries partly charged in a cool, dry place during long breaks, following the manual.
  • Check the propeller for damage and fishing line wrapped around the shaft.
  • Keep the software up to date where your system allows it.
