Rigging a ProKicker

A ProKicker is usually mounted on the transom beside the main engine and connected to it with a tie bar, so you steer both from the helm while trolling. Match the kicker's shaft length to the main engine where possible, and make sure the kicker can tilt clear when the main engine is running at speed. Some anglers add a remote throttle so they can adjust trolling speed without leaving the rod station. ProKickers need a battery for electric start and power trim, and their charging output can help keep a trolling or starting battery topped up.

Getting the Most From a Tiller 15

On a jon boat or inflatable, keep weight forward to help the boat plane, set the trim pin so the shaft is vertical when under way, and choose a prop that lets the motor reach its recommended full throttle revs with your normal load. A spare prop, shear pin or hub and spark plug are cheap insurance on remote water.
