Honda 2.3 HP Outboard for Sale: The Air Cooled BF2.3

The Honda BF2.3 is unusual in the outboard world: it is air cooled. Instead of pumping water through the engine like almost every other outboard, it uses a fan and fins, much like a lawnmower engine. That removes the water pump, impeller and cooling passages entirely, which makes the motor lighter, simpler and very hard to damage by running it in shallow, sandy or weedy water. Here is every Honda 2.3 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

BF2.3 Models in Stock

BF is Honda four stroke, 2.3 is the horsepower, D is the generation, H is tiller, and S or L is the shaft length.

Why Air Cooling Matters

  • No water pump: there is no impeller to wear out or clog, one of the most common failure points on small outboards.
  • No blocked cooling: running in sand, mud or weed will not overheat it through a blocked intake.
  • No corrosion inside: salt water never flows through the engine block.
  • Lighter weight: fewer parts mean an easier carry.

You will hear a little more engine noise than from a water cooled motor, but for many tender and canoe owners the simplicity is worth it.

Centrifugal Clutch

The BF2.3 uses a centrifugal clutch. At idle the propeller does not turn, so you can start the motor and hold position. As you open the throttle, the clutch engages and the boat moves. To go astern, you swivel the motor round. It is a simple, light arrangement that works well on small boats.

Who Is the BF2.3 For?

  • Yacht owners with small tenders who want the lightest, simplest motor possible.
  • Canoe and kayak owners using a side bracket.
  • Anglers on small lakes and ponds.
  • Owners who boat in shallow, sandy or weedy water.

For more speed or heavier loads, look at the Honda 5 HP.

Short or Long Shaft?

Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull. About 15 inches calls for the short shaft (S); about 20 inches, typical of small sailboats and brackets, calls for the long shaft (L).

Care Tips

  • Keep the cooling fins and air intake clean and clear.
  • Rinse the outside after salt water use; there is no internal flushing needed.
  • Check the oil before every trip.
  • Drain the carburettor or use stabilised fuel before storage.
  • Carry and store it only on the side shown in the owner's manual.
