Which 90 Is Right for You?

F90 for all round use

The standard F90 is a smooth, economical four cylinder four stroke, perfect for bowriders, pontoons, fishing boats and RIBs. It offers a great balance of performance and fuel economy.

VMAX SHO 90 for speed

VMAX SHO (Super High Output) models are tuned for faster acceleration and higher top speed. They are popular on bass boats, flats boats and light performance hulls where speed matters.

F90 Jet for rivers

The jet version uses a pump instead of a prop, so it can run over rocks and gravel bars in very shallow rivers. It trades some speed and economy for that ability.

Boats That Suit a Yamaha 90

20 or 25 Inch Shaft?

Measure from the top of your transom to the bottom of the hull. Around 20 inches calls for L; around 25 inches calls for X. Boats with jack plates or setbacks may differ, so ask if you are unsure.

Rigging and Care

Most Yamaha 90s are remote control engines, so plan for a control box and cables, steering (hydraulic is recommended at this size), a key switch and harness, gauges, a battery and a fuel system with a water separating filter. VMAX SHO owners on bass boats often add a jack plate to fine tune engine height for top speed. For care, flush after every salt water trip, change engine oil, filter and gear oil on schedule, inspect anodes and the water pump impeller, and keep fuel fresh. On the jet version, grease the bearing and check the intake grate after use, and adjust impeller clearance as it wears to keep performance sharp.
