Start with the boat's capacity plate for the maximum horsepower, then measure the transom: about 15 inches means S, about 20 inches means L. After that, think about how you use the boat.

Jet drives are for very shallow, rocky rivers, where a prop would hit bottom. They lose some power compared with a prop motor of the same size, which is why a 40 HP jet is often fitted where a 30 HP prop motor would normally do. High thrust T models use a lower gear ratio and a bigger prop to push heavy pontoons, sailboats and work boats. VMAX SHO models are tuned for bass boats and fast skiffs.
