Buying a Used Outboard: What to Check

A good used outboard can save you a lot of money, but only if it's been looked after. Whether you buy from us or anyone else, ask about these things.

• Hours and year. Hours matter more than age. A well-serviced engine with moderate hours is often a better buy than a low-hour engine that sat for years.
• Compression. Even readings across all cylinders are a good sign of a healthy powerhead.
• Gear oil. Milky oil means water in the lower unit. Metal flakes mean gear wear.
• Corrosion. Check the leg, the clamp bracket and the anodes, especially on saltwater engines.
• Shaft length and rotation. Make sure they match your boat before you buy.
• Controls and rigging. Older engines may need specific controls, gauges or harnesses.
