Honda Outboard Motors for Sale: The Complete Buying Guide

Honda built its first outboard in 1964, and from the start it was a four stroke at a time when almost every other outboard was a smoky two stroke. That early commitment to clean, quiet, fuel efficient engines still defines Honda Marine today. Honda outboards share engineering with the company's cars and motorcycles, which shows in their smooth running and long life. On this page you can browse every Honda outboard motor for sale in our stock, from 2.3 HP to 250 HP, and use this guide to pick the right one.

Shop Honda Outboards by Horsepower

Portable Honda outboards (2.3 to 9.9 HP)

The BF2.3 is air cooled, so there is no water pump to fail and it weighs very little, which makes it a favourite for tenders and canoes. The 5, 8 and 9.9 HP models suit inflatables, small boats, sailboats and kicker duty. Browse Honda 2.3 HP, Honda 5 HP, Honda 8 HP and Honda 9.9 HP outboards.

Mid range Honda outboards (15 to 30 HP)

Honda V6 outboards (200 to 250 HP)

Honda's V6 engines power offshore centre consoles, cruisers and twin installations, with mechanical or drive by wire controls and counter rotation options. Browse Honda 200 HP, Honda 225 HP and Honda 250 HP outboards. You can also view our 2023 Honda outboards collection.

Why Choose a Honda Outboard?

Automotive engineering

Honda brings car engine know how to the water. Larger models use technology such as VTEC variable valve timing, which gives the engine strong low speed torque for a quick holeshot and extra breath at high revs for top end speed.

BLAST and Lean Burn

BLAST (Boosted Low Speed Torque) advances ignition timing during hard acceleration so the boat climbs onto plane faster. Honda's Lean Burn Control leans out the fuel mixture at steady cruising speeds, so you go further on each tank. Many Honda models also show an ECO light when the engine is running in its most efficient range.

Quiet, smooth running

Honda four strokes are some of the quietest outboards on the water, with low vibration that makes long days and trolling more comfortable.

Corrosion protection

Honda uses a multi layer paint process and careful material choices to help protect against salt water corrosion, which matters if you run in the sea.

Power Thrust models

Power Thrust versions, marked BFP, use a lower gear ratio and bigger propeller to push heavy hulls, pontoons and sailboats. They are the Honda equivalent of a high thrust motor.

How to Read a Honda Model Code

Every Honda outboard motor for sale on our site uses Honda's model code. Here is how to read it:

Letter or partMeaning
BFHonda four stroke outboard
BFPPower Thrust version with a lower gear ratio
NumberHorsepower, for example BF90 is 90 HP
Letter after the numberModel generation, for example A or D
SShort shaft, 15 in
LLong shaft, 20 in
XExtra long shaft, 25 in
UUltra long shaft, 30 in
HTiller handle
RRemote control
TPower trim and tilt
GGas assist tilt
CCounter rotation on V6 models
D (after the shaft on V6 models)Drive by wire digital controls, as opposed to R for mechanical
WTWhite cowling

So a BF15D3LHT is a 15 HP D series four stroke with a 20 inch shaft, tiller handle and power tilt. A BF250DXCDA is a 250 HP V6 with a 25 inch shaft, counter rotation and digital controls. Codes differ a little between engine sizes, so each product page explains its own.

Choosing the Right Shaft Length

The anti ventilation plate should sit level with the bottom of the hull, or slightly below. A shaft that is too short lets the propeller pull in air. One that is too long adds drag and spray.

  1. Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the bottom of the hull at the centre line.
  2. About 15 in: short shaft (S).
  3. About 20 in: long shaft (L).
  4. About 25 in: extra long shaft (X).
  5. About 30 in: ultra long shaft (U).

If you have a jack plate, bracket or sailboat mount, the right answer may differ. Send us your measurement and boat details and we will help you choose the right Honda outboard motor for sale.

Choosing the Right Horsepower

Always respect the maximum horsepower on your boat's capacity plate. Within it, think about your boat and how you use it:

  • Canoes and small tenders: the BF2.3 or BF5.
  • Inflatables, sailboats and kickers: 8 to 9.9 HP, with Power Thrust for heavier boats.
  • Jon boats and small skiffs: 15 to 30 HP.
  • Pontoons and family boats: 40 to 100 HP.
  • Bay boats and centre consoles: 115 to 150 HP.
  • Offshore and heavy boats: 200 to 250 HP V6, often as twins.

A well matched engine planes easily with a full load, cruises at mid throttle and uses less fuel than a small engine run flat out all day.

Tiller or Remote Steering?

Honda's smaller and mid range models come in tiller (H) or remote (R) versions. Tillers are simple, light and leave the deck open, which many anglers prefer. Remote engines are steered from the console and need controls, cables or digital parts, a key switch and gauges. Honda's V6 engines are available with mechanical controls or with drive by wire (iST), which gives smooth, precise shifting and throttle response. Each product page lists what is included.

Twin Engine Setups

On a twin installation, one engine should turn the prop in the standard direction and the other in the opposite direction. Honda marks counter rotation V6 models with a C, such as BF250DXCRA. This balances propeller torque so the boat runs straight and steers evenly. When repowering, match the shaft lengths and control type on both engines.

Repowering With a Honda

If your hull is in good shape but the engine is old, thirsty or hard to get parts for, a Honda repower can give the boat a new life. Owners who switch from an old carbureted two stroke usually notice three things straight away: the boat is quieter, there is no smoke at the dock, and the fuel gauge drops far more slowly. Before you choose, check these points:

  • Engine weight: compare the dry weight of the Honda with your old engine, since a heavier motor changes how the boat sits and trims.
  • Transom height: measure again rather than copying the old engine's shaft length, which may have been wrong.
  • Controls: Honda remote engines need Honda compatible controls and harnesses, and V6 drive by wire models need digital controls.
  • Steering: bigger engines may need a stronger hydraulic steering system.
  • Fuel system: fit new hoses, a new primer bulb and a water separating filter, and make sure the tank is clean.

Send us photos of your current rigging and we can list the parts you are likely to need.

Getting the Propeller Right

Honda publishes a full throttle rev range for every model, and the right propeller lets the engine reach that range with your usual load aboard. If the engine over revs, step up in pitch. If it labours below the range, step down. A heavy pontoon, a work boat and a light bay boat with the same Honda will often need very different props. Aluminium props are a good value choice for most users, while stainless steel props resist damage better and can improve acceleration on faster boats. Power Thrust models come with props designed for pushing weight rather than chasing top speed.

Fuel Tips for Honda Four Strokes

Modern fuel injected Hondas are not fussy, but they do like clean, fresh fuel. Buy from busy stations, avoid letting fuel sit in the tank for months, and add a marine stabiliser if the boat will not be used for a while. A water separating filter between the tank and engine is cheap insurance, especially in humid or coastal areas where condensation can build up in tanks.

Breaking In a New Honda

  • Run at varied, moderate throttle settings for the first hours.
  • Avoid long periods at full throttle until break in is complete.
  • Check oil level before every trip.
  • Have the first service done at the interval in the owner's manual.

Maintaining Your Honda Outboard

  • Flush with fresh water after every salt water trip, using the flush port where fitted.
  • Change engine oil, oil filter and gear oil on schedule.
  • Check the water pump impeller, anodes, spark plugs and propeller.
  • Use fresh fuel, and stabilise it before storage.
  • On the air cooled BF2.3, keep the cooling fins and air intake clean.
  • Winterise in cold climates.

Honda four strokes have a reputation for running for many years with basic care, and a service history helps them keep their resale value.
