Mercury 250 HP Outboard for Sale: Verado, FourStroke and Pro XS

Mercury offers three distinct engine families at 250 horsepower, and we stock all of them. Each suits a different kind of boat and owner, so choosing the right family is the first step. Here is every Mercury 250 HP outboard for sale in our stock, with a guide to help you choose.

The Three Families

Verado 250: premium and quiet

Verado is Mercury's premium line, focused on quiet, smooth running and a refined helm experience, with integrated electric steering and digital controls. In stock: Verado 250 L, XL, XXL, CXL and CXXL, plus white versions such as the Verado 250 XL WH.

FourStroke 250: the all rounder

Mercury's FourStroke 250 uses a 4.6 litre V8 for strong torque from low revs, with a focus on efficiency and dependability. In stock: 250 L, XL, XXL, CXL and CXXL, each also available with DTS controls (for example the 250 XL DTS) and in white.

Pro XS 250: performance

Pro XS is tuned for acceleration and speed: 250XL Pro XS, 250XL Pro XS DTS and 250L Pro XS TorqueMaster.

Decoding the Model Names

• L, XL, XXL: 20, 25 and 30 inch shafts.
• C: counter rotation, as in CXL or CXXL, for one engine in a twin rig.
• DTS: Digital Throttle and Shift.
• WH: white cowling.
• TorqueMaster: performance gear case for jack plate setups.

Which Family Is Right for You?

• Verado if you want the quietest ride and premium features on a high end centre console or dual console.
• FourStroke if you want strong, efficient power at a lower price, for fishing boats, centre consoles and pontoons.
• Pro XS if speed and holeshot matter most, on bay boats, bass boats and performance hulls.

Single or Twin?

A single 250 suits many 7 to 8 metre boats. For twins, pair a standard engine with a C (counter rotation) engine of the same family and shaft length so the boat tracks straight.

Rigging Notes

Verado engines use integrated electric steering and digital controls. FourStroke and Pro XS engines can be rigged with mechanical controls or DTS depending on the model. All need quality batteries and a fuel system with water separation. Ask us for a rigging list for your boat.

Propellers and Care

Most 250 HP boats run stainless steel props, chosen so the engine reaches the top of its recommended full throttle rev range with a typical load of fuel, gear and crew. On twins, make sure each engine has a prop matched to its rotation. For care, flush after every salt water trip, change engine oil, filters and gear lube on schedule, inspect anodes and the water pump impeller, and use clean fuel with a good water separator. Keep service records: they help a Mercury hold its value when you sell.
