Evinrude Outboard Motors for Sale: The Complete Buying Guide

Evinrude is one of the oldest names in outboards. Ole Evinrude sold his first detachable rowboat motor in Milwaukee in 1909, and for more than a century the brand powered fishing boats, runabouts and work boats around the world. In its final years under BRP, Evinrude was best known for the E-TEC, a direct injection two stroke that was cleaner and more efficient than older two strokes while keeping their light weight and punch. BRP ended new outboard production in 2020, which makes good Evinrude engines sought after by owners who want to keep their boats running on the system they already know. On this page you can browse every Evinrude outboard motor for sale in our stock and learn what to check before you buy.

What Makes the E-TEC Different?

Direct injection two stroke

Older two strokes mixed fuel and oil in the crankcase and wasted some unburned fuel out of the exhaust. The E-TEC injects fuel straight into the cylinder at high pressure, after the exhaust port closes. The result is a two stroke that is far cleaner and more economical than older carbureted engines, while keeping the simple design and light weight that two strokes are known for.

Low maintenance

E-TEC engines were designed with long maintenance intervals, and there is no engine oil to drain and change because the oil is injected automatically from a separate tank. Many owners like how little routine work the engines need compared with a four stroke.

Light weight and strong torque

Weight for weight, an E-TEC usually delivers more low end torque than a four stroke of the same rating. That helps boats jump onto plane quickly and makes E-TECs popular on light hulls, tiller boats and bass boats.

Built in storage and fogging mode

Many E-TEC models include an automatic winterisation routine that fogs the engine for storage, which saves time at the end of the season.

Evinrude four strokes

Alongside the E-TEC, Evinrude sold a line of small four stroke portables. These are simple, light motors that suit tenders and kicker duty, and many parts are shared with other well known small outboards.

How to Read an Evinrude Model Code

Every Evinrude outboard motor for sale on our site shows its model code. Evinrude codes changed over the years, so use this as a general guide and check the product page for the exact meaning:

Letter or partMeaning
E (first letter)Evinrude E-TEC engine family
NumberHorsepower, for example E90 is 90 HP
Letters in the middleGeneration and features such as tiller, power trim or electric start
L (last letter)Long shaft, 20 in
X (last letter)Extra long shaft, 25 in
No shaft letter or SUsually short shaft, 15 in, on small motors
Ending in 4Small four stroke portable

For example, an E90DSL is a 90 HP E-TEC with a 20 inch shaft, while an E135HGX is a 135 HP E-TEC with a 25 inch shaft. If you are matching an engine to existing rigging, send us the model code from your old engine and we will compare it for you.

Buying an Evinrude Today: What to Know

Because new Evinrude production has ended, it pays to buy with your eyes open. Here is what we suggest:

  • Check the condition statement. Each product page says whether the engine is new old stock or used and tested. Our tested and running engines are started and checked before sale.
  • Ask about hours and history. For used engines, we share what we know about hours and service.
  • Think about parts and service. Parts for E-TEC engines remain widely available through dealers and specialists, but local support varies by country. Check that a mechanic near you works on Evinrude.
  • Warranty. Factory warranty depends on the engine's age and registration. Ask us exactly what applies before you order.
  • Use the right oil. E-TEC engines are designed for specific two stroke oils. Using the recommended oil is important for engine life.

Why Buy Evinrude If You Already Run One?

If your boat is rigged for Evinrude, replacing like with like can save a lot of money. Your controls, gauges, harnesses, oil tank and steering may all carry over, while switching brands often means replacing every one of those parts. Matching a twin with an identical engine also keeps the boat balanced and both engines behaving the same. For many owners, a good Evinrude is the most cost effective repower or replacement available.

E-TEC Two Stroke vs a Modern Four Stroke

Buyers often ask whether they should choose an E-TEC or switch to a four stroke. There is no single right answer, so here is an honest comparison:

  • Weight: E-TECs are usually lighter than four strokes of the same power, which helps small boats, tiller boats and hulls that are sensitive to weight on the transom.
  • Acceleration: the two stroke design gives strong torque low in the rev range, so boats tend to plane quickly.
  • Running costs: E-TECs need two stroke oil, but no engine oil changes. Four strokes need oil and filter changes but no separate oil.
  • Noise: modern four strokes are generally quieter at idle and trolling speeds.
  • Long term support: current four stroke brands are still in production, so dealer networks are growing, while Evinrude support depends on parts suppliers and independent mechanics.

If your boat is already rigged for Evinrude and you have a mechanic who knows E-TECs, staying with Evinrude is often the most practical and affordable choice.

How We Check Tested and Running Engines

Engines listed as tested and running are checked before they are offered for sale. Typical checks include starting and running the engine in a test tank, confirming water flow from the tell tale, checking shifting in forward, neutral and reverse, looking at the condition of the lower unit and gear oil, and inspecting the outside of the engine for damage or corrosion. Where the engine allows it, we also review diagnostic data such as running hours. If you want more detail about a particular engine, such as extra photos or a video of it running, just ask before you buy.

Getting the Propeller Right

Every E-TEC has a recommended full throttle rev range. With your normal load aboard, the engine should reach that range at wide open throttle. If it over revs, choose a prop with more pitch. If it cannot reach the range, choose less pitch. Light bass boats and heavy pontoons with the same engine will need very different props, so it is worth testing before settling on one.

Choosing the Right Shaft Length

The anti ventilation plate should be level with the bottom of the hull or a little below. Too short and the prop ventilates; too long and the gear case drags.

  1. Measure from the top of the transom down to the bottom of the hull at the centre line.
  2. About 15 in: short shaft.
  3. About 20 in: long shaft (L).
  4. About 25 in: extra long shaft (X).

Jack plates and brackets change this, so ask us if you are unsure which Evinrude outboard motor for sale fits your transom.

Choosing the Right Horsepower

Check the capacity plate on your boat and never exceed its maximum horsepower. Then think about use:

  • Tenders and canoes: 3.5 to 6 HP.
  • Inflatables, sailboats and kickers: 9.8 to 15 HP.
  • Jon boats and skiffs: 25 to 30 HP.
  • Fishing boats and pontoons: 40 to 90 HP.
  • Bay boats and bigger runabouts: 105 to 135 HP.

Tiller or Remote?

Small and mid range Evinrudes come in tiller or remote versions. Tiller motors are simple and light, while remote motors need controls, cables, a key switch and gauges. If you are replacing an existing Evinrude, your current controls may well work with the new engine, which is a big cost saving. Each product page lists what is included.

Replacing One Engine in a Twin Setup

If one engine in an Evinrude twin installation has failed, the cheapest fix is often to replace just that engine with a matching Evinrude rather than repowering the whole boat with another brand. To keep both engines working together, match the horsepower, shaft length and rotation of the engine you are replacing, and check that the model generation suits your existing controls and gauges. Send us the full model code and serial plate photo from both engines and we will help you find the closest match in our stock. Matching engines also keep the boat sitting level, make trimming easier and mean both sides use the same parts and service schedule.
