Mercury 2.5 HP Outboard for Sale: The 2.5MH

Mercury's smallest outboard is designed for owners who value portability above everything else. The Mercury 2.5 is a single cylinder four stroke with a built in fuel tank, pull start and tiller, light enough to carry in one hand and simple enough to start and run without any fuss. If you need a dependable Mercury 2.5 HP outboard for sale for a tender or small boat, this is the motor.

Model in Stock

In Mercury's code, 2.5 is the horsepower, M is manual start and H is tiller handle. With no shaft letter, the motor has the standard 15 inch short shaft.

Who Is the Mercury 2.5 For?

  • Yacht owners who want a light motor for short runs between anchorage and shore.
  • Canoe and kayak owners using a side mount bracket to cover more water.
  • Small dinghy and punt owners on lakes and quiet rivers.
  • Anglers fishing small waters where engine size is limited.

A 2.5 HP motor moves boats at displacement speed, not on plane. If you want more speed or carry heavier loads, look at the Mercury 3.5 HP or Mercury 4 HP.

Why Choose the Mercury 2.5?

Ultra portable

Its light weight and integrated carry handle make it easy to lift from a car, onto a tender or onto a yacht's rail mount.

Self contained

The built in fuel tank means there is nothing else to carry. Fill it, clamp the motor on and go.

Clean four stroke running

No oil mixing, low fuel use and quiet running, with none of the smoke of old two stroke portables.

Simple to steer

Like most micro outboards, it is steered with the tiller and you reverse by swivelling the motor round on its mount, which keeps the design light and simple.

Checking the Shaft Length

The 2.5MH has a 15 inch short shaft, which suits most inflatables, dinghies and canoe brackets. Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull. If your measurement is closer to 20 inches, for example on a sailboat bracket, look at long shaft options such as the 3.5MLH.

Using It as a Tender Motor

Clamp the motor centrally and tighten the clamp screws firmly, then attach a safety lanyard so it cannot be lost if the clamps loosen. Set the tilt so the shaft is vertical with the boat loaded. Close the fuel vent when transporting the motor, and carry or lay it only on the side shown in the manual.

Care Tips

  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
  • Check oil level before every trip.
  • Run the carburettor dry or use stabilised fuel before storage.
  • Inspect the propeller and spark plug each season.
