Yamaha Outboard Motors for Sale: The Complete Buying Guide
Yamaha built its first outboard, the P-7, in 1960, and over the following decades became one of the most trusted names on the water. Commercial fishermen, charter captains, bass anglers and weekend families all run Yamahas for the same reasons: they start, they keep running, and they hold their value. On this page you can browse every Yamaha outboard motor for sale in our stock, from 2.5 HP portables up to the 425 HP XTO Offshore, and use this guide to choose the right model, shaft length and rigging for your boat.
Shop Yamaha Outboards by Horsepower
Portable Yamaha outboards (2.5 to 9.9 HP)
Light, easy motors for tenders, inflatables, jon boats, canoes and sailboat auxiliaries. The F2.5 weighs about as much as a full cooler, while the F9.9 and T9.9 are the classic kicker motors for trolling behind a bigger main engine. Browse Yamaha 2.5 HP, Yamaha 4 HP, Yamaha 6 HP, Yamaha 8 HP and Yamaha 9.9 HP outboards.
Mid range Yamaha outboards (15 to 30 HP)
The sweet spot for 12 to 16 foot aluminium boats, skiffs, larger inflatables and drift boats. These motors come in manual or electric start, tiller or remote, and several have power tilt. Browse Yamaha 15 HP, Yamaha 25 HP and Yamaha 30 HP outboards, including the T25 High Thrust and the 30 HP jet drive.
Yamaha outboards from 40 to 90 HP
Popular on 15 to 19 foot fishing boats, pontoons, RIBs and small runabouts. This range includes standard F models, High Thrust T models for heavy hulls and J jet drive versions for shallow rivers. Browse Yamaha 40 HP, Yamaha 50 HP, Yamaha 60 HP, Yamaha 70 HP, Yamaha 75 HP and Yamaha 90 HP outboards.
Yamaha outboards from 175 to 200 HP
The go to power for bay boats, bass boats, 18 to 22 foot centre consoles and family bowriders. You will find standard F models, counter rotating LF models for twin rigs, and VMAX SHO versions built for speed. Browse Yamaha 175 HP and Yamaha 200 HP outboards.
High horsepower Yamaha outboards (350 to 425 HP)
Big V8 power for offshore centre consoles, sportfishers, large cruisers and multi engine installations. Browse Yamaha 350 HP V8 outboards and the Yamaha 425 HP XTO Offshore range.
The Main Yamaha Outboard Families
F series four strokes
The F series is the core of the Yamaha range. These four stroke engines are known for clean running, smooth idle and long service life. Most models from 15 HP up are fuel injected, and the larger ones work with Yamaha's digital gauges and controls.
T series High Thrust
High Thrust models such as the T9.9, T25, T50 and T60 use a lower gear ratio and a larger diameter propeller. They will not win a drag race, but they push heavy hulls, pontoons and sailboats with far more authority than a standard motor of the same horsepower, and they excel as kickers and on work boats.
VMAX SHO
VMAX SHO (Super High Output) engines, marked VF in the model code, are tuned for fast acceleration and top end speed. They are a favourite on bass boats, flats boats and performance hulls where every mile per hour matters, yet they keep Yamaha's four stroke reliability.
Jet drive outboards
Jet models, marked J in the model code, replace the propeller with a pump, so there is nothing hanging below the hull to strike rocks or gravel. They are built for shallow rivers, rocky creeks and sandbars. Expect some loss of top speed compared with a prop motor of the same rated horsepower, which is why jet outboards are often chosen one size up.
V8 F350 and XTO Offshore
The F350 was Yamaha's first V8 outboard, a 5.3 litre four stroke that set the standard for big offshore power. Its successor, the XTO Offshore 425, uses a 5.6 litre V8 with direct injection, integrated electric steering and a gear case built for very large propellers. It is designed for heavy boats that need huge thrust, not just top speed.
How to Read a Yamaha Model Code
Every Yamaha outboard motor for sale on our site is listed with its full model code. The letters tell you a lot about the engine.
| Letter or part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F | Standard four stroke outboard |
| LF | Counter rotation four stroke, for the second engine in a twin rig |
| VF | VMAX SHO high output model |
| T | High Thrust model with a low gear ratio |
| XF, LXF | XTO Offshore V8, standard and counter rotation |
| Number | Horsepower, for example F90 is 90 HP |
| S | Short shaft, 15 in |
| L | Long shaft, 20 in |
| X | Extra long shaft, 25 in |
| U | Ultra long shaft, 30 in |
| E (on XTO) | 35 in shaft |
| J | Jet drive (in place of the shaft letter) |
| M | Manual (pull) start on small motors |
| E or W | Electric start on small and mid range motors |
| H | Tiller handle |
| P or T | Power tilt, or power trim and tilt |
| Final letter | Model generation, for example A, B or C |
So an F15LEHA is a 15 HP four stroke with a 20 inch shaft, electric start and a tiller handle, while an LF350XCC is a counter rotating 350 HP V8 with a 25 inch shaft. Yamaha's codes vary slightly between engine families, so each product page spells out what its own code means.
Choosing the Right Shaft Length
Getting the shaft length wrong is the most common and most expensive mistake buyers make. The anti ventilation plate above the propeller should sit level with the bottom of the hull, or up to about an inch below it. Too short and the prop sucks air and slips. Too long and the lower unit drags, slowing the boat and throwing spray.
- Measure from the top of the transom, where the motor clamps or bolts, straight down to the bottom of the hull at the centre line.
- Around 15 in calls for a short shaft (S).
- Around 20 in calls for a long shaft (L).
- Around 25 in calls for an extra long shaft (X).
- Around 30 in calls for an ultra long shaft (U), and some XTO installations use 35 in (E).
Sailboats with outboard brackets, boats on jack plates and hulls with setbacks may need a different length. Send us your measurement and boat details and we will help you pick the correct Yamaha outboard motor for sale.
Choosing the Right Horsepower
Your boat's capacity plate shows the maximum horsepower and load the hull is rated for. Never go over it. Within that limit, match power to how you really use the boat:
- Tenders, canoes and sailboats: 2.5 to 8 HP is usually plenty.
- Kicker and trolling motors: the F9.9 and T9.9 are the standard choice.
- Small aluminium and inflatable boats: 15 to 30 HP gets most of them on plane.
- Pontoons and heavy hulls: look at High Thrust T models, which turn bigger props for more push.
- Bay, bass and family boats: 90 to 200 HP covers most 17 to 22 foot hulls.
- Offshore boats: 350 and 425 HP V8s, often in twins, triples or quads.
An underpowered boat struggles to plane with a full load and burns more fuel because the engine runs near full throttle all day. A properly matched Yamaha cruises comfortably at mid throttle, which is better for fuel use and engine life.
Tiller or Remote Steering?
Tiller models, marked H in the code, let you steer, shift and throttle from the motor. They are simple and light, and many anglers love the open deck. Remote models are steered from a console and need a control box, cables or digital controls, a key switch and gauges. Larger Yamahas can be paired with Yamaha's digital electronic controls, and multi engine boats can use Helm Master EX for joystick docking. Each product page lists what comes in the box and what is sold separately.
Twin and Multi Engine Setups
On twin installations, one engine turns the propeller one way and the other turns it the opposite way. This cancels out propeller torque, so the boat tracks straight and steers evenly. Yamaha marks counter rotation engines with an L before the F, such as LF200XCA or LXF425XSA. When repowering a twin rig, order one standard and one counter rotating engine with matching shaft lengths.
Popular Yamaha Outboards in Stock
Some of the Yamahas buyers ask about most include the Yamaha XF425ESA XTO Offshore, the Yamaha F350XCC V8, the Yamaha VF175XA VMAX SHO, the Yamaha F90LB, the Yamaha T25LWTC High Thrust and the Yamaha F9.9LMHB portable. You can also see our 2023 Yamaha outboards collection. Every product page lists specifications, a model code breakdown and buying advice.
New Yamaha Outboards and Warranty
Our new Yamaha outboards ship in the original factory crate or carton. Yamaha's warranty terms depend on the country where the engine is registered and used, and on whether the boat is used for leisure or commercial work, so ask us about the coverage that applies to you before ordering. Keep your invoice and follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual.
How Buying From Us Works
- Choose your engine from the horsepower categories above.
- Confirm the model code, shaft length and included parts on the product page.
- Request a freight quote to your country, city or nearest port.
- Place your order once you are happy with the total price.
- We ship the crated engine and send you tracking details.
Please read our terms and conditions and refund and return policy before ordering, and see what other buyers say on our reviews page.
Worldwide Shipping
We ship Yamaha outboard motors for sale to buyers around the world. Portables travel by courier, mid size engines on pallets, and big V8s crated by freight or ocean container. Your quote shows the full delivery cost before you pay. Let us know whether you need delivery to a home, a business, a freight terminal or a port.
Breaking In a New Yamaha
A new four stroke needs a short break in period so the rings and bearings bed in properly. Always follow your owner's manual, but in general:
- Spend the first hours at low and moderate throttle, changing speed often.
- Avoid long runs at wide open throttle until break in is finished.
- Check the oil before every outing.
- Book the first service at the hours shown in the manual.
Looking After Your Yamaha
- Flush the engine with fresh water after every salt or brackish water trip.
- Change engine oil, filter and gear oil on schedule.
- Inspect the water pump impeller, anodes and spark plugs at the recommended intervals.
- Use fresh fuel and a stabiliser if the boat will sit for more than a few weeks.
- Grease the steering, tilt tube and swivel points.
- Winterise properly in freezing climates.
A well maintained Yamaha can run for thousands of hours, and a full service record helps it hold its value when you eventually sell.
Yamaha vs Other Brands
All the major brands build good engines, and the right choice often comes down to local service support, existing rigging and personal preference. Yamaha's strengths are reliability, a huge model range and strong resale value. If you are comparing, browse our Suzuki outboards, Mercury outboards, Honda outboards and Tohatsu outboards.
