Which Mercury 40 Fits Your Boat?

Standard tiller

For open aluminium boats where the driver sits at the stern.

Big Tiller

Big Tiller models have a longer, multi function handle with shift and throttle controls built in, making a 40 HP tiller boat far more comfortable to drive, especially for long days fishing.

Remote

For pontoons and console boats, steered from the helm.

Command Thrust SeaPro

A larger gear case turns a bigger prop for more push on heavy pontoons and work boats, while SeaPro calibration suits commercial use.

Jet

For shallow, rocky rivers where a propeller would not survive.

Boats That Suit a Mercury 40

  • Small to mid size pontoons.
  • 4.5 to 5.2 metre aluminium fishing boats.
  • Work boats, ferries and tour boats.
  • Flat bottom river boats, using the jet.

Rigging and Care

Tiller models need only a fuel tank and line, and a battery for electric start and power trim. Remote models need a control box and cables, steering, a key switch and harness, gauges and a battery. If you are replacing an older Mercury of similar size, much of the rigging may carry over, so send us your current model code. For care, flush after salt water use, change engine oil, filter and gear oil on schedule, and check the water pump impeller and anodes at each service. On the jet model, grease the bearing after use, keep the intake grate clear and adjust impeller clearance as it wears.

Choosing a Propeller

The right prop lets the engine reach its recommended full throttle revs with your normal load. Pontoons and heavy work boats usually need a lower pitch, or a Command Thrust prop, while light fishing boats can run more pitch for extra speed. Tell us about your boat and we can suggest a starting point.
