Yamaha 70 HP Outboard for Sale: The F70

The Yamaha F70 has a special reputation: when it was introduced, it was one of the lightest four strokes in its power class, and it remains a go to engine for boats that are sensitive to weight on the transom. It packs a compact, single overhead cam four cylinder engine into a lightweight package, giving aluminium boats and light pontoons lively performance without making them stern heavy. Here is every Yamaha 70 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

Why Weight Matters

Many small and mid size boats, especially aluminium fishing boats and older fibreglass hulls, were designed when outboards were lighter two strokes. Hanging a heavy four stroke on the back can make them sit low at the stern, take longer to plane and feel sluggish. The F70's low weight helps these boats keep their intended balance, plane quickly and run efficiently. It is one of the most common reasons owners choose the F70 for a repower.

Boats That Suit a Yamaha 70

  • Aluminium fishing boats of 5 to 5.8 metres.
  • Light pontoons where you want more pep than a 60 without adding much weight.
  • Older fibreglass runabouts being repowered from two strokes.
  • RIBs and tenders where low weight helps handling.

F70 Highlights

Excellent power to weight

Strong performance from a light package, which improves holeshot, top speed and balance.

Smooth four cylinder

Four cylinders give a smooth, quiet ride and a refined idle.

Fuel injection

Easy starting and good fuel economy, with no carburettors to clean.

Power trim and tilt

Adjust the running angle while underway and lift the engine for launching and shallow water.

Rigging the F70

The F70LA is a remote control engine. You will need a control box with cables, a steering system, a key switch and harness, gauges, a starting battery and a fuel system with a water separator. If you are repowering from an older Yamaha, some of your existing rigging may be compatible. Send us your current setup for advice.

Choosing a Propeller

Fit a prop that allows the engine to reach its recommended full throttle revs with your normal load. Lighter boats often benefit from a little more pitch; pontoons and heavily loaded boats need less.

F70 vs F60 vs F75

Choose the F60 for slightly lower cost and when 60 HP is enough. Choose the F70 if you want more performance while keeping weight down. Choose the F75 if your boat is heavier and benefits from a larger engine with more torque.

Looking After Your F70

  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
  • Change oil, filter and gear oil on schedule.
  • Inspect anodes, the water pump impeller and the propeller.
