Mercury 50 HP Outboard for Sale

The Mercury 50 is a popular choice for pontoons, aluminium fishing boats and utility boats. It is a smooth, fuel injected four stroke with power trim and tilt, offered with a standard gear case or with Command Thrust for boats that need extra push. You can have it as a tiller or as a remote engine. Here is every Mercury 50 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

Models in Stock

Standard gear case

  • Mercury 50ELPT: electric start, remote control, power trim and tilt, 20 inch shaft.
  • Mercury 50ELHPT: electric start, tiller, power trim and tilt, 20 inch shaft.

Command Thrust

Standard or Command Thrust?

Command Thrust uses a larger gear case with a lower gear ratio, so it can turn a bigger diameter propeller. That bigger prop moves more water, giving stronger acceleration with heavy loads, better control at low speeds and much more effective reverse thrust when docking. It is the better choice for pontoons, heavy aluminium boats and work boats. The standard gear case suits lighter boats where you want a little more top speed.

Tiller or Remote?

Tiller models (H) are ideal for open aluminium boats and river boats where the driver sits at the stern. Remote models suit pontoons and console boats; they need a control box and cables, steering, a key switch, gauges and a battery.

Boats That Suit a Mercury 50

  • Pontoons of 5 to 6 metres, ideally with Command Thrust.
  • Aluminium fishing boats of 4.6 to 5.5 metres.
  • Utility and work boats carrying heavy loads.
  • Small runabouts rated for 50 HP.

Mercury 50 Strengths

  • Electronic fuel injection for easy starts and good economy.
  • Power trim and tilt on every model we stock.
  • Smooth, quiet four stroke running.
  • Wide parts and service support.

Propeller Choice

Fit a prop that lets the engine reach its recommended full throttle revs with your normal load. Command Thrust models use their own larger props; standard models use regular props. Pontoon owners often need a lower pitch than runabout owners.

Care Tips

  • Flush after salt water use.
  • Change engine oil, filter and gear oil on schedule.
  • Inspect anodes, the water pump impeller and the prop.

Repowering With a Mercury 50

The Mercury 50 is a common repower for pontoons and aluminium boats that originally carried an older two stroke. A modern four stroke runs quieter, starts more easily and uses less fuel. Check that your transom can handle the weight, measure the transom height again rather than copying the old shaft length, and plan for compatible controls and gauges on remote models. A fresh battery, new fuel lines and a water separating filter complete the job.
