Suzuki 6 HP Outboard for Sale: The DF6A
Of all the small Suzukis, the DF6A is the one we recommend most often. It shares its compact single cylinder layout with the DF4A, but the extra power makes a real difference: a lightly loaded inflatable can climb onto plane, and a heavier tender can push into wind and current without straining. If you need a Suzuki 6 HP outboard for sale that one person can still lift, this is it.
DF6A Models in Stock
- Suzuki DF6AS5: 15 inch short shaft, production series 5.
- Suzuki DF6ASW5: short shaft, series 5, white finish.
- Suzuki DF6AL5: 20 inch long shaft, series 5.
- Suzuki DF6ASW2: short shaft, series 2, white finish.
- Suzuki DF6AL2: long shaft, series 2.
Every version is a pull start tiller motor with forward, neutral and reverse. The differences are shaft length, finish and production series.
Which Boats Suit a Suzuki 6 HP?
- Inflatables of 2.7 to 3.2 metres: enough power for one person to plane in good conditions, and plenty for two at cruising speed.
- Yacht tenders: carries crew and shopping to shore quickly, even against a breeze.
- Small sailboats: the long shaft DF6AL keeps the prop in the water as the boat pitches.
- Small fishing dinghies: a quiet, economical motor for lakes and sheltered water.
Always check your boat's capacity plate for its maximum horsepower before choosing.
Why Choose the DF6A?
More power, same easy handling
Because it shares its compact body with the 4 HP, the DF6A gives you extra push without much extra weight. That makes it the most practical choice for many tender owners.
Proper gearshift
Forward, neutral and reverse make docking, anchoring and coming alongside a yacht much easier than on gearless micro motors.
Flexible fuel
Use the built in tank for short trips, or connect an external tank for longer runs where the model allows. Check each product page for the fuel setup.
Simple to service
Oil changes, spark plug changes and impeller checks are straightforward, which is valuable if you cruise to places where mechanics are hard to find.
Short or Long Shaft?
Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull. Around 15 inches calls for a short shaft (S), which suits most inflatables and dinghies. Around 20 inches, common on sailboat brackets and some small boats, calls for a long shaft (L). On a sailboat, err towards the longer shaft so the prop stays submerged in waves.
Series 2 or Series 5?
Both production series share the same basic design. Series 5 is the newer build; series 2 motors are often a little cheaper. Either is a solid buy, so choose on shaft length first and budget second.
Looking After Your DF6A
- Flush with fresh water after salt water use and check the cooling water stream every time you start.
- Check oil level before each trip and change it at the intervals in the manual.
- Drain or stabilise fuel before storage.
- Fit a safety line so the motor cannot be lost overboard while mounting it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Suzuki 6 HP plane an inflatable?
A light inflatable with one person usually will in calm water. With two adults and gear, expect fast displacement speeds instead.
What is the difference between DF6AS and DF6ASW?
The W versions have a white finish; the motor itself is the same.
Should I choose 6 HP or 9.9 HP?
If you need to carry the motor regularly, the 6 HP is much easier. If you need to plane with two people, look at the Suzuki 9.9 HP.
