Tohatsu 3.5 HP Outboard for Sale: MFS3.5CS and MFS3.5CL
The Tohatsu MFS3.5 shares its light, compact body with the MFS2.5 but gives a little more push for loaded tenders, headwinds and longer trips. It also comes with a long shaft option, which makes it a handy choice for small sailboats. Here is every Tohatsu 3.5 HP outboard for sale in our stock.
Models in Stock
- Tohatsu MFS3.5CS: 15 inch short shaft, tiller, manual start.
- Tohatsu MFS3.5CL: 20 inch long shaft, tiller, manual start.
2.5 or 3.5?
The two motors weigh almost the same. If your boat is rated for 3.5 HP, the MFS3.5 gives you extra margin for passengers, gear and wind for very little extra weight. The MFS2.5 suits boats rated only for 2.5 HP or owners who want the absolute minimum.
Who Buys a Tohatsu 3.5?
- Yacht owners with 2.3 to 2.7 metre tenders.
- Day sailer and small sailboat owners, using the long shaft MFS3.5CL.
- Canoe and small dinghy owners on lakes and rivers.
- Anglers wanting a quiet motor for small waters.
Features
Light and compact
Easy to carry by one person and to stow in a locker or car boot.
Built in tank
Self contained fuel for short trips with no extra hoses.
Long shaft option
The MFS3.5CL keeps the prop deeper on sailboats and brackets, where a short shaft would draw air when the stern lifts.
Tohatsu reliability
A simple, proven design that is easy to service.
Short or Long Shaft?
Measure from the top of the transom or bracket to the bottom of the hull. About 15 inches calls for the MFS3.5CS; about 20 inches calls for the MFS3.5CL. On sailboats, choose the long shaft if you are in between.
Using It on a Sailboat
Mount the motor on an adjustable bracket set so the anti ventilation plate is a few inches below the waterline when lowered. Tilt the motor clear of the water when sailing, and close the fuel vent when it is tilted up.
Care Tips
- Flush after salt water use.
- Check oil before each trip and change it on schedule.
- Use fresh fuel and drain or stabilise it before storage.
- Store the motor on the correct side.
A Handy Backup or Spare Motor
Because the MFS3.5 is so light and compact, many owners keep one as a spare: on a yacht for when the main tender motor is out of action, in a boat shed as a backup for a fishing boat, or in a car boot for spontaneous trips on lakes and rivers. Stored with fresh, stabilised fuel and serviced once a year, it is ready to go when you need it.
Getting the Best Fuel Economy
Small displacement boats gain little speed at full throttle but use much more fuel. Running at two thirds to three quarters throttle usually gives the best balance of speed, economy and noise.
