Mercury 4 HP Outboard for Sale: 4MH and 4MLH

The Mercury 4 is the entry point to Mercury's 4, 5 and 6 HP family, a group of single cylinder four strokes that share a sturdy, compact design. Compared with the 2.5 and 3.5, it adds a proper gearshift with forward, neutral and reverse, which makes docking and coming alongside a yacht much easier. Here is every Mercury 4 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

Who Is the Mercury 4 For?

  • Inflatables and tenders of around 2.4 to 3 metres.
  • Small aluminium and fibreglass dinghies.
  • Day sailers and small keelboats needing a light auxiliary.
  • Anyone who wants a gearshift without moving up to a heavier motor.

Key Features

Forward, neutral and reverse

Start in neutral, idle while you cast off, and back away from the dock without spinning the motor around.

Built in and external fuel

Use the internal tank for short trips. Many motors in this family can also connect to an external tank for longer range. Check the product page for details.

Shared platform with the 5 and 6

Parts and accessories are shared across the family, making service straightforward.

Shallow water drive

Tilt positions let you keep running slowly in shallow water and lift the motor clear when beaching.

Short or Long Shaft?

Around 15 inches of transom calls for the 4MH; around 20 inches calls for the 4MLH. The long shaft is the usual choice on sailboats and outboard brackets, while most inflatables use the short shaft.

4 HP, 5 HP or 6 HP?

All three share the same body and weigh about the same, so the choice comes down to your boat's rating and how much performance you want. The Mercury 5 HP range also includes Sail Power and propane versions, and the Mercury 6 HP gives the most push in this family.

Getting the Best From a Small Motor

Small outboards perform best when the boat is trimmed well. Move passengers and gear forward to keep the bow down, set the motor's tilt so the shaft is vertical when the boat is moving, and avoid running at full throttle for long periods, since most displacement boats gain little speed above about three quarters throttle while using much more fuel. A spare shear pin or prop hub, a spare spark plug and a small tool kit take up little room and can save a day out.

Transport and Storage

Close the fuel vent and fuel valve, then carry and lay the motor only on the side shown in the owner's manual. This keeps oil where it belongs and prevents starting problems. For long storage, drain the carburettor or use stabilised fuel.

Care Tips

  • Flush after salt water use and check for a steady cooling water stream on start up.
  • Change engine oil and gear oil at the intervals in the manual.
  • Inspect the propeller, anode and spark plug.
