Mercury 5 HP Outboard for Sale: Standard, Sail Power and Propane

The Mercury 5 is one of the most versatile small outboards available, because it comes in more specialist versions than almost any motor its size. As well as standard petrol models, Mercury offers Sail Power versions built for sailboats and propane models that run on LPG. Here is every Mercury 5 HP outboard for sale in our stock, with a guide to choosing between them.

Standard Petrol Models

  • Mercury 5MH: 15 inch short shaft, manual start, tiller.
  • Mercury 5MXLH: 25 inch extra long shaft, for high transoms and sailboat brackets.

Sail Power Models

Propane (LPG) Models

What Is Sail Power?

Sail Power versions are set up for the job sailboats need: pushing a heavy displacement hull at low to moderate speed. They use a propeller designed for thrust rather than speed, which gives better control in marinas, stronger reverse and more authority against wind and current. Longer shafts keep the prop in the water as the stern rises and falls.

Why Choose Propane?

Propane models run from a standard LPG cylinder instead of petrol. That means no fuel spills, no stale fuel gumming up the carburettor over winter and no petrol smell on board. Many sailors already carry propane for cooking, and some lakes and reservoirs that restrict petrol engines allow propane. Starting is easy, and maintenance is simpler because the fuel system stays clean.

Which Mercury 5 Is Right for You?

  • Tender or inflatable: 5MH or 5MH-LPG.
  • Sailboat with a bracket: 5MLHA Sail Power, or the 25 inch 5MXLH or 5MXLHA-LPG for tall transoms.
  • Petrol restricted lake: a propane model, after checking local rules.
  • Small fishing boat: 5MH for simplicity.

Choosing a Shaft

No shaft letter means 15 inches, L means 20 inches and XL means 25 inches. Measure from the mounting point to the bottom of the hull. For sailboats, choose the longer shaft if you are between sizes.

Care Tips

  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
  • Change oil and gear oil on schedule.
  • For petrol models, use fresh fuel and stabilise it before storage.
  • For propane models, check hoses and connections regularly and store cylinders safely.

Transport and Storage

Close the fuel vent and valve on petrol models, or disconnect the propane line on LPG models, before carrying the motor. Lay it only on the side shown in the owner's manual, and store propane cylinders upright in a ventilated space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a propane outboard run as long as petrol?

Run time depends on cylinder size; carry a spare cylinder for longer trips.

What does XL mean?

A 25 inch extra long shaft.

Is Sail Power only for sailboats?

It suits any heavy displacement boat that needs thrust more than speed.
