Yamaha 4 HP Outboard for Sale: The F4

The Yamaha F4 gives you a noticeable step up in pushing power over the F2.5 while staying easy to carry. It is a single cylinder four stroke built on the same compact platform as Yamaha's 5 and 6 HP models, which means a robust design and plenty of parts support worldwide. Here is every Yamaha 4 HP outboard for sale we currently stock, plus an F4SMHA in our 2023 Yamaha collection.

F4 Models in Stock

The code reads: F (four stroke), 4 (horsepower), S or L (shaft), M (manual start), H (tiller) and A (generation).

Boats That Suit a Yamaha 4 HP

  • Yacht tenders and inflatables of around 2.4 to 3 metres.
  • Small rowing dinghies, punts and aluminium boats on lakes and rivers.
  • Day sailers and small keelboats that need an auxiliary for calm days and harbour work.
  • Kicker duty on very small fishing boats.

The F4 pushes boats efficiently at displacement speed. To plane a light inflatable, consider the Yamaha 6 HP.

F4 Highlights

Compact single cylinder

The F4 shares its engine platform with the F5 and F6, giving it a solid build and a smooth, quiet feel for its size.

Easy to carry and mount

A carry handle and sensible weight balance make it manageable for one person, whether you are moving it from a car or clamping it on a tender.

Built in tank with external option

The F4 has its own fuel tank for short trips, and Yamaha's small motors can usually be connected to an external tank for longer range. Check the product page for the exact setup.

Shallow water tilt

Yamaha's portables typically offer tilt positions that let you run slowly in shallow water and lift the motor clear when beaching.

Choosing a Shaft Length

For most inflatables and dinghies, choose the 15 inch short shaft (S). For sailboats, brackets and higher transoms, choose the 20 inch long shaft (L). Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull to be sure, and remember that on sailboats the propeller must stay submerged as the stern rises and falls.

Is a Four Stroke Right for a Small Motor?

Yes for most users. Four strokes are quieter, smoke free and more economical than old two strokes, with no oil to mix. The main thing to remember is to carry and store the motor only on the side shown in the manual, so oil stays where it belongs.

Looking After Your F4

  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
  • Check the oil before each outing and change it at the recommended interval.
  • Inspect the propeller, shear pin or hub, and spark plug.
  • Use fresh fuel, and drain or stabilise it before storage.
