Mercury 35 HP Jet Outboard for Sale: The 35ELPT Jet
Some of the best fishing and hunting water in the world is too shallow, too rocky or too full of gravel bars for a normal outboard. That is the water the Mercury 35 Jet was built for. Instead of a propeller and lower gear case, it uses a jet pump that sits almost flush with the bottom of the boat, so there is nothing to strike the bottom. If you need a Mercury 35 HP jet outboard for sale for a river boat, this is the model we stock.
Model in Stock
- Mercury 35ELPT Jet: electric start, remote control, power trim and tilt, jet pump lower unit.
E is electric start, L the long powerhead mounting, PT power trim and tilt. With no H, it is a remote control model, steered from a console.
How a Jet Outboard Works
The engine drives an impeller inside a pump housing. Water is drawn up through an intake grate on the bottom of the pump and blasted out of a nozzle at the back, pushing the boat forward. Steering and reverse are handled by directing the jet stream. Because the intake sits roughly level with the hull bottom, a jet boat can run in water only inches deep once it is on plane.
Who Needs a Jet?
- River anglers and guides fishing shallow, rocky rivers.
- Hunters running shallow marshes, creeks and flooded timber.
- Remote communities travelling rivers where props are constantly damaged.
- Rescue and survey teams working in shallow water.
Things to Know Before You Buy
Jets trade efficiency for access
A jet pump is less efficient than a propeller, so a jet outboard is typically built on a larger powerhead than its rating suggests. Expect somewhat lower top speed and higher fuel use than a prop outboard of similar output.
Hull matters
Jets work best on flat bottom or shallow V aluminium hulls designed for jet use. Planing quickly is important, because a jet boat draws more water at low speed.
Mounting height is critical
The front of the intake must sit at the right height relative to the hull bottom. Too high and the pump sucks air; too low and it adds drag. Follow the installation guide or ask us for help.
Rigging a Remote Jet
The 35ELPT is a remote model, so plan for a control box and cables, steering, a key switch and harness, gauges and a battery. Many river boats use a side or centre console with mechanical steering.
Looking After a Jet
- Grease the jet bearing after each day of use, or as the manual advises.
- Check the intake grate and clear weeds, sticks and stones.
- Inspect the impeller edge and adjust clearance as it wears; worn impellers lose a lot of performance.
- Flush the engine after silty or salt water use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How shallow can a Mercury 35 Jet run?
Once on plane, jet boats can run in very shallow water, but depth depends on the hull and load.
Is a jet harder to maintain?
It adds a few simple tasks, mainly greasing and impeller checks.
Do you have other jets?
Yes, see our Mercury 25 jet and Mercury 40 jet models.
