Tohatsu 4 HP Outboard for Sale: The MFS4

The Tohatsu MFS4 is the first of Tohatsu's 4, 5 and 6 HP family of single cylinder portables. These motors share a sturdy, compact design and are popular with yacht owners, sailing schools and rental fleets because they are light, dependable and easy to service. Here is every Tohatsu 4 HP outboard for sale in our stock.

Models in Stock

MFS is Marine Four Stroke, 4 the horsepower, the D letters identify the generation and version, and S or L the shaft length.

Who Is the MFS4 For?

  • Yacht tenders and inflatables of 2.4 to 3 metres.
  • Small dinghies and punts on lakes and rivers.
  • Day sailers and small keelboats needing a light auxiliary, using the long shaft.
  • Sailing schools and rental fleets that need simple, robust motors.

Why the Tohatsu 4?

Light, balanced design

Easy for one person to carry and mount, with a handle placed for a comfortable lift.

Gearshift

Motors in this family typically offer forward, neutral and reverse, which makes docking and coming alongside a yacht much easier than on micro motors. Check the product page for the exact setup.

Fuel options

Use the built in tank for short trips, and many motors in this family can also connect to an external tank for more range.

Shared parts

Sharing a platform with the 5 and 6 HP keeps parts easy to source and service simple.

Short or Long Shaft?

About 15 inches of transom calls for the MFS4DDS; about 20 inches calls for the MFS4DDL. Most inflatables use the short shaft; most sailboat brackets need the long shaft.

4, 5 or 6 HP?

All three share the same body and weigh about the same. Choose based on your boat's rating and how much push you want. The Tohatsu 5 HP range also includes propane and Sail Pro versions, and the Tohatsu 6 HP gives the most power.

Transport and Storage

Close the fuel vent and valve, then carry and lay the motor only on the side shown in the manual. For long storage, drain the carburettor or use stabilised fuel.

Care Tips

  • Flush after salt water use and check the cooling water stream on start up.
  • Change engine and gear oil at the recommended intervals.
  • Inspect the prop, anode and spark plug.

Getting the Best Fuel Economy

On displacement boats such as tenders and small sailboats, the last part of the throttle adds little speed but uses much more fuel. Cruising at two thirds to three quarters throttle usually gives the best balance of speed, economy and noise, and extends the range of the built in tank.
