Boats That Suit a Yamaha 40
- Pontoons: small to mid size pontoons for relaxed cruising.
- Aluminium fishing boats: 4.5 to 5.2 metre boats with tiller or console steering.
- River boats: flat bottom jet boats for shallow rivers, using the F40J.
- Work and utility boats: dependable power for daily use.
Why the F40 Jet Is So Popular
The jet versions replace the propeller with a pump, so there is nothing below the hull to strike rocks, logs or gravel. Guides on shallow rivers use them to reach water that prop boats cannot. Jets are less efficient than props and are typically built on a larger powerhead to deliver their rated output at the pump, so expect a little more weight and fuel use than a prop motor of the same rating. In return, you get access to water few other boats can reach.
Tiller or Remote?
Tiller models (H) suit open aluminium boats and river boats where the driver sits at the back and wants direct control. Remote models suit pontoons and console boats, and need a control box, cables, steering, a key switch, gauges and a battery.
Choosing Your F40
- Decide between propeller and jet based on the water you run.
- Choose tiller or remote steering.
- Check transom height: prop models here are 20 inch; jets need careful mounting height for the intake.
Looking After Your F40
- Flush with fresh water after salt water or silty river use.
- Change oil and filter, and gear oil on prop models, on schedule.
- On jets, grease the bearing, check the intake grate and adjust impeller clearance as it wears.
