What Makes the Verado Different From Other Mercurys
Mercury builds a few families of big outboards. The FourStroke is the everyday line. The Pro XS is the light, fast one for bass boats and performance hulls. The Verado sits at the top. It’s the quiet, smooth, premium engine you see hung on the back of offshore center consoles, big dual consoles and family cruisers.
The name has been around since 2004, and the engine under the cowl has changed a lot since then. That matters when you’re shopping, because two motors both called Verado 300 can be completely different engines depending on the year.
The supercharged years
The first Verados used supercharged inline engines. The four-cylinder covered 135 to 200 HP, and the 2.6 litre six covered 200 to 350 HP. A supercharger packs extra air into a small engine, so they made a lot of power for the size. They also revved high, with a full throttle range of 5,800 to 6,400 rpm on the six, and the 350 wanted 89 octane fuel. Our 2016 Mercury 200XL Verado is one of the four-cylinder supercharged motors.
The V8 and V10 years
Around 2018 Mercury switched the Verado over to big naturally aspirated engines. The 250 and 300 got a 4.6 litre V8. Later the 350 and 400 got a 5.7 litre V10, and the 600 got a 7.6 litre V12. More displacement, no supercharger, regular 87 octane fuel and a lower rev range. The new V8 300 is about 10 percent lighter than the supercharged six it replaced, even though it’s almost two litres bigger.
So when you look at any Mercury Verado for sale, ours or anyone else’s, check the year and the engine type first. The price, the fuel you’ll buy and the rigging you need all follow from that.

For the supercharged motors, ask us for the sheet on the exact unit. The old six weighs roughly 35 kg more than the V8 and has a 70 amp alternator instead of 115, so it’s worth knowing which one you’re getting.
How to Read a Verado Model Code
People shopping for a Mercury Verado for sale get stuck here more than anywhere else, so here’s the short guide. Take “Verado 300 CXXL WH”.
- 300 is the horsepower.
- C means counter rotation. It turns the prop the other way. You only need this for the second engine on a twin rig, or the outer engines on triples and quads, so the props don’t pull the boat to one side.
- L is a 20 inch shaft, XL is 25 inch, XXL is 30 inch.
- WH means the cowl is white (Mercury calls it Cold Fusion White). No letters means the usual Phantom Black.
So a 300 CXXL WH is a 300 HP, counter rotation, 30 inch shaft, white Verado. If you’re replacing one of a pair, you need the same rotation as the motor coming off. Get that wrong and you’re shipping it back.
Measure your transom before you order any Mercury Verado for sale. Go from the top of the transom straight down to the bottom of the hull at the centerline. About 20 inches means L, about 25 means XL, about 30 means XXL. Most offshore center consoles over 25 feet are on 25 or 30 inch shafts. If you’re unsure, send us a photo and the boat’s make and model and we’ll tell you.
Which Mercury Verado for Sale Fits Your Boat
Horsepower is the easy part. Look at the plate on your boat for the max HP rating and stay under it. Beyond that, it’s about the hull and how you use it.
Verado 250
A good single for a 22 to 24 foot bay boat, a dual console or a deck boat. It’s also a common twin on boats in the 26 to 30 foot range when the owner wants range more than speed. Same block and same weight as the 300, so it’s a calm, under-stressed engine.
Verado 300
This is the one most people end up buying. It’s the go-to twin for 25 to 33 foot center consoles and walkarounds, and a strong single for heavier 24 to 26 foot boats. If you’re looking at a Mercury Verado for sale to repower an offshore boat, the 300 is usually the right answer.
Verado 350
For bigger boats running twins and triples, from about 30 feet up. The V10 350 has a lot of torque, which helps when the boat is loaded with fuel, ice and people. The extra weight over the V8 matters on smaller boats, so check the transom rating too.
Verado 200 (supercharged)
A budget way into a Verado for a 19 to 22 foot boat. Smooth and quiet, but older, so it’s mostly for buyers who want the Verado feel without paying V8 prices.
Why People Choose a Verado
Most people searching for a Mercury Verado for sale have already run one, or been on a boat that had one. I’ve had a lot of buyers tell us the same thing: once you’ve run a Verado, it’s hard to go back. Here’s what they mean.
It’s quiet. The V8 and V10 use Mercury’s Advanced MidSection, which isolates the engine from the boat, plus noise management under the cowl. At cruise you can talk normally on the console. At idle, plenty of people check the gauges to see if it’s still running.
The steering is light. Power steering is built into the engine, so there’s no separate pump and no heavy wheel. On twins and triples you also get easier joystick setups.
It charges well. The 115 amp alternator on the V8, and 150 amp on the V10, keeps up with big screens, livewells, windlasses and fridges. Idle Charge keeps putting power in even at low revs.
It runs on regular fuel. The V8 and V10 Verados are happy on 87 octane. Handy in places where premium fuel at the dock is expensive or hard to find.
It holds value. A Verado on the back of a boat helps when you sell, because buyers know the name. That’s one more reason a Mercury Verado for sale is a smart buy.
Verado vs Pro XS vs FourStroke
A lot of buyers come in looking at a Mercury Verado for sale and end up asking whether they should get a Pro XS or a regular FourStroke instead. Fair question, since the 250 and 300 all share the same 4.6 litre V8 base.
- FourStroke V8: plain and reliable, lighter than the Verado, no built-in power steering. Good value.
- Pro XS V8: the lightest of the three at around 505 to 511 lb, tuned for speed and holeshot, popular on bass boats. You can read more on our Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale page.
- Verado V8: heavier at 600 lb because of the Advanced MidSection and integrated steering, but much quieter and smoother. Best for offshore boats and families.
If you care most about speed and weight, go Pro XS. If you want comfort on long runs, go Verado. If you want simple and cheap, the FourStroke is fine. There’s more on that family on our Mercury 250 HP outboard guide.
Mercury Verado for Sale: What the Prices Mean
People ask why one Mercury Verado for sale on our site is $14,000 and another 350 is over $40,000. It’s a fair thing to wonder about, so here’s what moves the price.
The engine family. The supercharged inline motors are older and cost the least. The V8 250 and 300 sit in the middle. The V10 350 and 400 cost the most, and the newest V10 rigs with full digital rigging are at the very top.
Year and hours. A late model engine with low hours costs more than an older one that’s done a few seasons. Ask us for both numbers on any unit you’re looking at.
What’s included. Some listings are the bare engine. Others include controls, a prop and parts of the rigging. A higher price sometimes just means more in the crate.
Shaft and rotation. XXL and counter rotation units are made in smaller numbers, so they can cost a little more and sell out faster.
Colour. White engines usually sit a few hundred dollars above the black ones.
When you compare a Mercury Verado for sale here with one somewhere else, compare like with like. Same year, same hours, same shaft, same rigging. Once you do that, most buyers find our prices fair, and we’re always happy to go through the numbers with you.
Twin and triple rigs
If you need two or three engines, ask for a package price. A matched standard and counter rotation pair of the same year makes the boat handle properly and makes servicing simpler, because both engines need the same parts at the same time. We’ll look for the closest match we have and tell you honestly if the years or hours differ.
Repower or new boat build
Most of our buyers are repowering an older boat. Some are boat builders or dealers rigging new hulls. Either way, tell us. A builder usually wants several of the same Mercury Verado for sale at once and needs a steady supply, and we can plan around that.
Buying a Mercury Verado for Sale From Us
Here’s how it works, step by step.
- Pick the motor. Use the table above or browse the Mercury outboards page. Note the full code, including shaft, rotation and colour.
- Message us. Use the contact form, or call or WhatsApp +1 209 690 5983. Tell us the model and where it’s going.
- Get your quote. We confirm the unit is still here, send photos if you want them, and give you a price with shipping to your door or port.
- Pay and ship. Once payment clears, we crate the engine and send it. You get tracking details.
Before any Mercury Verado for sale leaves us, we check it over. We look at the cowl, the midsection and the gearcase for damage, check the lower unit oil, and make sure everything that should come with it is in the crate. If you want specific photos, like the serial plate or the prop shaft, just ask before you pay.
What usually comes with it
That depends on the listing. A bare Mercury Verado for sale is just the motor itself. Rigging parts like the DTS controls, harnesses, gauges and the prop are often separate. Tell us what your boat already has and we’ll quote the rest. On a repower from an older Mercury, you’ll almost always need new digital controls, because the V8 and V10 Verados are DTS only.
Worldwide Shipping for Every Mercury Verado for Sale
We ship every Mercury Verado for sale all over the world. Big engines like these go on a pallet in a proper crate, by sea freight or air freight depending on how fast you need it and what you want to spend. Sea is cheaper, air is faster. We’ll give you both prices if you ask.
The engine is strapped down, the lower unit and prop shaft are protected, and the crate is marked for upright handling. We send the paperwork your customs office needs. Import duties and local taxes are set by your country and paid at your end, so it’s worth checking with a local agent before the engine lands.
If you’re buying several engines, say a pair or triples of the same Mercury Verado for sale for one boat, they ship together and that usually brings the cost per engine down.
Looking After Your Verado
Buying the right Mercury Verado for sale is half the job. Keeping it running well is the other half. Verados are not fussy, but they do like regular service. A few simple habits make a big difference.
- Flush after salt water. Every time. The V8 and V10 have an easy flush port.
- Stick to the service schedule. Oil, filter and gearcase oil at the intervals in the owner’s manual, usually every 100 hours or once a year.
- Keep the fuel clean. Use a good water separating fuel filter and don’t leave old fuel in the tank over winter.
- Check the anodes. Replace them when they’re about half gone.
- Watch the battery. Modern Verados are electronic. Weak batteries cause odd faults that look like engine problems.
For general boat care and safety, the BoatUS site has plenty of plain, useful articles, and the US Coast Guard boating safety site covers the equipment you’re supposed to carry. If you want to read about Mercury itself, there’s a decent history on Wikipedia. Mercury’s own website has the owner’s manuals.
Questions About a Mercury Verado for Sale
Is a used Mercury Verado for sale worth it?
Usually, yes, as long as it’s been looked after. Verados are built for long hours. Ask for the hours, the year and the service history. We give you what we know about every unit.
Can I put a V8 Verado on a boat that had the old six?
Most of the time, yes. The bolt pattern is standard. You will need new controls and harnesses, and you should check the transom can handle the weight. The V8 is actually lighter than the old six, so that part is easy.
Do you sell pairs and triples?
Yes. Almost every Mercury Verado for sale on our site comes in standard and counter rotation, so a matched pair is easy. Ask for both codes when you message us.
What about warranty?
That depends on the unit and where you are. Ask us about the specific engine and we’ll tell you what applies. Our refund and return policy and terms cover the rest.
How long does delivery take?
Air freight is usually a week or two door to door. Sea freight can be four to eight weeks depending on the route. We’ll give you a realistic estimate with your quote.
Can you help me pick a prop?
Yes. Tell us the boat, the engine and what speed and load you run at, and we’ll suggest a starting prop. Getting the prop right matters a lot on a Verado. You want the engine reaching the top of its rev range at full throttle with a normal load.
