What Makes a Mercury Pro XS Outboard for Sale Different
From 200 to 300 HP, Mercury builds three outboard families on the same 4.6 litre V8: the FourStroke, the Pro XS and the Verado. The Pro XS is the light, sharp one.
It’s tuned for acceleration and top speed. The calibration is more aggressive, it revs higher than the regular FourStroke, and it uses a few parts you don’t get on the others, like the TorqueMaster gearcase and Transient Spark ignition. It’s also the lightest of the three, which matters a lot on a bass boat where weight on the transom changes how the boat runs.
Before the V8, the Pro XS name was used on Mercury’s OptiMax two-strokes. Those were loved by tournament anglers for years. The V8 four-stroke Pro XS took over from them, and it weighs only a few pounds more than the old 300 OptiMax while burning far less fuel and oil.

The 175 Pro XS uses a 3.4 litre V6 at about 475 lb, and the smaller 115 and 150 Pro XS are four-cylinder engines. If you’re looking at those sizes, ask and we’ll check what we can get.
The Features That Matter on the Water
TorqueMaster gearcase
The TorqueMaster is a slimmer, lighter gearcase with a 1.75:1 ratio and the heavier 1.25 inch prop shaft. It’s made for high-speed boats where the prop runs partly out of the water at speed. It has low water pickups on the nose, so you can mount the engine higher and trim it out further without losing cooling. On a bass boat with a jack plate, that’s exactly what you want.
Transient Spark
When you slam the throttle down, the engine computer briefly adjusts the ignition timing to give more torque. You feel it as a harder holeshot. It’s one of those things you notice in the first five seconds of every run.
Adaptive Speed Control
This holds the rpm you set, regardless of load. Turn, run into a swell, or have someone move to the bow, and the engine holds its revs without you touching the throttle. It’s handy when you’re running long distances between fishing spots.
Advanced Range Optimization
At cruise, the engine leans out the fuel mix automatically to save fuel. You won’t hear or feel it, but you’ll notice it at the pump.
The sound
Mercury tuned the exhaust on the 200 to 300 Pro XS to sound like a performance engine. It has a deep note, but it’s still quieter than a lot of competing high-output motors.
How to Read a Pro XS Model Code
- 200, 225, 250 is the horsepower.
- L is a 20 inch shaft. XL is 25 inch.
- TorqueMaster means the performance gearcase, usually on 20 inch models.
- DTS means it’s set up for Digital Throttle and Shift controls. No DTS usually means mechanical cable controls.
- A C in front, like CXL, would mean counter rotation, used on twin rigs.
So a 250L Pro XS TorqueMaster is a 250 HP, 20 inch shaft, TorqueMaster gearcase engine. That’s the classic tournament bass boat setup.
Measure your transom before you order a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale. From the top of the transom down to the bottom of the hull: about 20 inches means L, about 25 means XL. Bass boats are nearly always 20 inch. Bay boats and center consoles are often 25.
Mechanical or DTS Controls?
This is a real decision when you’re picking a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale, because it affects what else you have to buy.
Mechanical means traditional throttle and shift cables. It’s cheaper, simple to fix, and if your boat already has a Mercury mechanical control box, you may be able to reuse it.
DTS means electronic controls. The shifting is smoother, throttle response is instant, and it opens up features like Adaptive Speed Control and easier twin engine sync. It costs more to rig, and you need DTS controls and harnesses.
If you’re repowering and want to keep costs down, mechanical is fine. If you’re rigging fresh or want every feature, go DTS. Tell us what’s on your boat now and we’ll tell you what you need.
Which Boats Suit a Pro XS
A Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale is a great fit for:
- Bass boats from about 18 to 21 feet. The 200 and 225 suit smaller hulls; the 250 is common on 20 to 21 footers.
- Bay boats and flats boats where shallow water running and speed matter.
- Multi-species fishing boats that need to cover big lakes fast.
- Performance runabouts where the owner wants acceleration over comfort.
It’s less suited to heavy offshore boats that cruise for hours. For that, the Verado’s smoothness and quiet are worth the extra weight. Our Mercury Verado for sale page explains the difference.
Before you buy any Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale, check your boat’s capacity plate for max horsepower and weight, and stay within it.
Pro XS vs Verado vs FourStroke
- Pro XS: lightest, fastest, sharper throttle, TorqueMaster option. Best for bass and performance boats.
- Verado: around 600 lb, much quieter and smoother, integrated power steering. Best for offshore and family boats.
- FourStroke: the plain version, good value and reliable. Best if speed isn’t the priority.
All three share the same basic 4.6 litre V8, so reliability is similar whichever you pick, and a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale is no riskier than the other two. The difference is in tuning, weight and features. For more on the 250 size across all three, see our Mercury 250 HP outboard guide.
If you’re comparing brands, our Suzuki 200 HP outboard page and the Yamaha 200 HP range are worth a look. Bass anglers who liked the old two-strokes may also want to read our Evinrude E-TEC guide.
Propping a Pro XS
Once you’ve bought a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale, the prop is the next big decision. Getting the prop right is where a Pro XS really comes alive. The wrong prop can cost you a lot of speed or leave the engine over-revving.
The rule: at wide open throttle, with your normal load and the engine trimmed and jacked where you usually run it, the engine should reach the top part of its rated rev range. If it doesn’t get there, the prop has too much pitch. If it goes past it, there’s too little.
Bass boats with a TorqueMaster usually run stainless props in the mid to high 20s of pitch, but every boat is different. Tell us the hull, the load and the setup and we’ll suggest a starting point.
Mercury Pro XS Outboard for Sale: What Affects the Price
You’ll notice the prices in our table are fairly close together, from about $8,100 to $10,300. Here’s what makes one Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale cost more than another.
Horsepower. The 250 costs more than the 200, even though they share the same block. The tuning, parts and demand are different.
Controls. DTS versions cost a few hundred dollars more than mechanical ones, and the rigging for DTS costs more too. That’s worth adding up before you decide.
Gearcase. TorqueMaster units are in demand from bass anglers, and that keeps their value up.
Year and hours. Always ask. A newer, low-hour engine is worth more and will usually carry more value when you sell the boat.
If you’re comparing a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale here with one elsewhere, line them up on the same points: horsepower, shaft, gearcase, controls, year, hours and what’s in the crate. That’s the only fair way to compare.
Repowering an Older Bass Boat
A lot of people who buy a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale from us have a good hull with a tired engine on it, often an old two-stroke. Repowering makes sense when the boat is sound and you like how it handles. Here’s a checklist I’d run through first.
- Check the transom. Any soft spots, cracks around the bolt holes or water in the core need fixing before you hang a new engine.
- Check the rating. Make sure the new horsepower and weight are within the boat’s capacity plate.
- Look at the jack plate. Most bass boats have one. Make sure it’s in good shape and rated for the engine weight.
- Count the rigging you’ll need. New controls or adaptors, harnesses, gauges or a digital display, a prop, and possibly new fuel lines and a water separating filter.
- Think about batteries. A four-stroke V8 with an 85 amp alternator charges well, but your starting battery needs to be in good shape. Electronic engines don’t like weak batteries.
- Plan the prop. Your old prop may not suit the new engine. Budget for at least one new one.
Done right, a repower with a Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale gives an older boat a new life: faster holeshot, better fuel economy, no oil to mix and much less smoke.
Twin Pro XS Rigs
On bigger bay boats and some performance hulls, people often buy two of the same Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale and run them as twins. You’ll need one standard rotation and one counter rotation engine of the same model, so the props cancel each other’s pull. DTS controls make twins much easier to run, with features that keep both engines in sync.
If you want a pair, give us both codes, or just tell us the boat and we’ll work out what you need. We’ll try to match years and hours as closely as we can, and we’ll tell you up front if they differ.

What’s included
Most listings are the engine itself. Controls, harnesses, gauges and the prop may be separate. Tell us what your boat already has and we’ll quote what’s missing so you’re not caught short on rigging day.
The First Few Hours
Whether your Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale is brand new or just new to you, the first few hours matter. Here’s what we tell buyers.
- Follow the break-in. On a new or rebuilt engine, vary the throttle for the first hours and don’t sit at full throttle for long periods. The owner’s manual gives the exact schedule.
- Check everything after the first run. Look for fuel or oil leaks, loose fittings and that the steering and controls move freely.
- Set the trim and jack plate gradually. Start low, then raise the engine and trim out in small steps while watching speed and water pressure. That’s how you find the sweet spot for your boat.
- Write down your numbers. Note rpm, speed and water pressure at full throttle once it’s set up. If something changes later, you’ll know straight away.
Do these things and you’ll get the most out of the engine from day one.
Worldwide Shipping for Every Mercury Pro XS Outboard for Sale
We ship every Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale all over the world. A V8 outboard goes in a proper crate on a pallet, by sea or air. Sea is cheaper, air is faster. We’ll quote both if you want.
The engine is strapped down, the gearcase and prop shaft are protected, and the crate is marked to stay upright. We send the shipping and customs paperwork. Import duty and local taxes depend on your country and are paid at your end, so ask a local agent what to expect.
If you want a pair for a twin rig, or several engines for a dealership or boat builder, they ship together and that usually brings the cost per engine down.
Looking After a Pro XS
A Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale that’s been looked after will give you years of fast, reliable running. Keep up with these basics.
- Flush after every use in salt or brackish water.
- Service on time, usually every 100 hours or once a year. Oil, filter, gear oil and a check of everything else.
- Keep the fuel clean with a good water separating filter.
- Watch the jack plate height. Running too high can starve the water pickups on some setups. Keep an eye on the water pressure gauge.
- Check the prop and skeg after any hit. A bent prop or damaged skeg costs speed and stresses the gearcase.
For boating safety and general advice, the US Coast Guard boating safety site and BoatUS are both useful. Mercury’s official site has the owner’s manuals, and the Mercury Marine Wikipedia page covers the company’s history.
Questions About a Mercury Pro XS Outboard for Sale
Is the Pro XS reliable?
Yes. Every V8 Mercury Pro XS outboard for sale is built on the same V8 as the FourStroke and Verado, which has a good record. The extra performance comes from tuning, not from stressing the engine beyond its design.
Can I run 87 octane?
Yes. The V8 Pro XS is rated for 87 octane minimum.
Does it fit my old OptiMax mounting?
The bolt pattern is standard, so usually yes. You’ll likely need new controls or at least new harnesses, and you should check the weight is within your transom’s rating.
Can I get a matched pair?
Ask us. We’ll look for standard and counter rotation units of the same model.
What about returns and warranty?
Ask about the specific engine. Our refund and return policy and terms and conditions explain the rest.
How long will delivery take?
Air freight is usually one to two weeks. Sea freight is often four to eight weeks depending on the route. We’ll give you a realistic estimate with the quote.
