What Is the Takacat Sport Series?
Takacat makes two main lines. The LX series has an open bow, closed only by straps, which makes boarding from a beach or the water very easy. The Sport series closes the bow and tapers it to a point, giving the boat more traditional lines.
Underneath, both lines share the same twin tube catamaran hull, the same removable Tube Transom and the same raised air floor. The difference is at the front. A closed bow throws spray aside and keeps the boat drier when you head into a chop. It also makes the boat look more like a classic inflatable tender, which some owners prefer at the marina.
The 380 S is the biggest Sport model. Takacat also builds the 260 S, 300 S and 340 S, and all four are on our site.
Why a Catamaran Inflatable?
A normal inflatable has one V shaped hull. It pushes a wall of water ahead, leans as people move, and needs more power to plane. A Takacat runs on two separate tubes. Water flows through the tunnel between them rather than being pushed aside. The boat sits flat, tracks straight and planes with less horsepower.
At speed, air is trapped under the deck and cushions the ride. At rest, the wide stance resists rolling, so you can stand up, cast, or lean out to grab a mooring line with confidence. The concept grew from Thundercat surf racing boats, and founder Greg Sowden refined it for years in Auckland, New Zealand before launching Takacat in 2007. Today more than 10,000 are in use worldwide.
Features of the Takacat 380 S for sale
Closed, tapered bow
The pointed bow parts waves instead of pushing them. In a head sea it keeps spray off the passengers better than an open bow. It also gives you somewhere to stow a bow bag or anchor out of the way.
Removable Tube Transom
The stern is a stainless frame that slides into sleeves in the tubes. Take it out and the tubes roll small. Leave the stern open and water drains straight out, so the boat never fills up under tow or in rain.
Locking fold down oarlocks
The Sport series uses fold down oarlocks that lock in place, with holders that keep the oars tidy when you are under power. Rowing is easy thanks to the low drag hull.
Raised high pressure floor
The air floor inflates to 10 psi and sits above the tubes’ lowest point, keeping your feet dry and giving a firm platform to stand on.
Protection where it counts
Heavy duty rubber on the underside of the tubes resists abrasion. A rubbing strake guards the sides against docks and hulls. Grab lines run along the tubes for passengers and swimmers.
Who the Takacat 380 S for sale Suits
Yacht owners who want a classic tender
The closed bow looks at home alongside a yacht, and the boat carries a crew of five ashore. It deflates to fit a locker on passage.
Open water day trips
If you cross open bays or face regular chop, the closed bow keeps everyone drier on the way out and back.
Fishing
The catamaran stance is steady for casting, and the 12 foot length gives room for two or three anglers and gear.
Families
Six seats, a calm hull and grab lines make the 380 S a confident choice for a family day on the water.
Choosing an Outboard for the Takacat 380 S for sale
Our listing rates the 380 S for up to 20 hp on a short shaft. Many Sport owners pick by how they load the boat:
- 4 to 6 hp for an economical tender that runs at displacement speed.
- 9.9 hp for planing with one or two aboard.
- 15 hp for planing with three or four and gear. The most common choice.
- 20 hp for heavy loads, long runs and rough water.
Check the capacity plate for maximum power and engine weight before you buy. If you lift the motor on and off often, a lighter motor makes life easier.
Browse our matching stock: Yamaha 6 HP outboards, Suzuki 9.9 HP outboards, Honda 15 HP outboards and Tohatsu 20 HP outboards. For silent, fuel free running, see our Torqeedo electric motors. We can quote a boat and motor package on the Takacat 380 S for sale.
Performance on the Water
The 380 S planes quickly and runs level. The twin hulls track like rails, so you steer with light touches on the tiller. In a head sea, the tapered bow slices through small waves and turns spray aside. Downwind, the long tubes resist broaching.
The shallow draft lets you nose into the beach or creep over sand bars. Heavy duty rubber under the tubes protects them when you run up onto sand.
Under tow behind a yacht, the boat follows straight and does not fill with water thanks to the open transom. That is a real plus on long passages between anchorages.
Setting Up the Takacat 380 S for sale
Setup is quick because there are no floorboards to fit. With the manual pump, expect about 8 to 15 minutes. With an electric pump, about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Inflate the tubes to 3 psi.
- Slide in the Tube Transom bars. Soapy water on the sleeves helps.
- Fit the motor mount boards with the supplied eye bolt.
- Insert the floor and inflate to 10 psi.
- Fold up the oarlocks and fit the oars.
- Mount the outboard.
- Check life jackets, lights, rules and the weather.
To pack away, reverse the steps. Deflate the floor, pull the transom, roll the tubes and fill the two bags.
Storage and Transport
Rolled up, the tubes form a compact bundle a little over a metre long. They fit in a car boot, a sail locker or a garage shelf. No trailer, no plates and no ramp fees.
For the summer, many owners keep the boat inflated, fit quick release beach wheels, and roll it down to the water. Some leave it on deck or on davits on a larger yacht.
Build Quality and Materials
Standard tubes use durable 0.9 mm, 1000 denier PVC with welded seams. Hypalon tubes are available for owners in hot, sunny climates who want the longest life. Pressure relief valves protect against over inflation and heat expansion. The transom is 304 stainless and the motor board is waterproof painted plywood. Takacats from 2.5 m and up carry CE certification and are built to ISO 6185 2.
Easy Re Tubing
When the tubes on a conventional inflatable wear out, the boat is usually finished because the transom is glued in. On a Takacat, you order a new set of tubes and slide in your existing transom and floor. That makes the Takacat 380 S for sale a long term boat rather than a disposable one, and it helps resale value.

380 S or 380 LX? Both are the same size with the same capacity. Choose the 380 S for a drier ride in open water and a classic tender look. Choose the 380 LX if you beach often, dive or swim from the boat, since the open bow is easier to board.
380 S or 340 S? The 340 S is lighter and suits two or three people. The 380 S adds length, a sixth seat and more power for heavier loads.
A Season With the Takacat 380 S for sale
Picture a typical summer. In early spring you unroll the bags on the lawn, pump up the tubes, slide in the transom and check everything over. Twenty minutes later the boat is ready and the outboard is on. You take it to the lake for a shakedown run to make sure the motor starts well after winter.
By June it lives on the back of the truck or on the beach wheels, ready for evening fishing trips. The closed bow earns its keep on windy afternoons, keeping spray off as you motor back across the bay. In July you take it on a family holiday, rolled in the car boot next to the luggage. At the campsite it goes together in minutes and the kids use it every day.
On a friend’s yacht in August it becomes the tender, towed behind between anchorages and used for shore runs. When autumn arrives you rinse it, dry it on the lawn, roll it loosely and store it on a garage shelf. That is the whole point of the Takacat 380 S for sale: a proper boat that fits around your life instead of taking over the driveway.
Sport Series Design Details
The Sport bow is built from the same tube material as the rest of the boat and closes the gap between the tubes at the front. Because it tapers to a point, it meets waves at an angle and splits them, rather than letting them run up between the tubes. That is the main reason Sport owners report a drier ride.
The trade off is boarding. With the LX you step over the open front onto the beach. With the Sport you climb over the tube like a traditional inflatable. Most owners find this no problem at a dock or alongside a yacht, but divers and swimmers often prefer the LX.
Everything behind the bow is shared with the LX range. You get the twin tube hull, the raised air floor, the stainless Tube Transom, the rubbing strake and the under tube rubber. Spare parts and accessories are interchangeable within each size.
Towing and Davits
Takacats tow well because the twin hulls keep them straight and the open transom stops them filling with water. Use the towing bridle D rings at the bow and a floating line. Lift the outboard or remove it on long tows to reduce drag and protect the motor.
If your yacht has davits, the light weight of the Takacat 380 S for sale makes lifting easy. Attach the falls to the bow D rings and the transom, keep the motor off or tilted, and lift evenly. In heavy weather it is safer to deflate the boat and stow it below than to leave it hanging.
PVC or Hypalon?
PVC is the standard fabric. It is light, strong, easy to repair and good value. In temperate climates, kept out of strong sun when stored, PVC tubes give many years of service.
Hypalon costs more and weighs a little more, but it resists UV, heat, fuel and abrasion better over the long term. If you live in the tropics, leave the boat inflated in the sun, or plan to keep it for a decade, Hypalon is worth considering. Ask us about availability on the Takacat 380 S for sale.

Popular Setups
Marina tender. 6 hp four stroke, bow bag, grab line. Classic looks and a dry ride to the dock.
Bay cruiser. 15 hp tiller, cooler and fishing rods. Planes with three aboard and crosses chop comfortably.
Family runabout. 20 hp, life jackets for six, picnic gear. Calm and stable for kids.
Silent explorer. Torqeedo electric outboard for lakes and wildlife watching.
Petrol or Electric for the 380 S?
A four stroke petrol outboard gives the most range and speed for the money, and fuel is easy to find. It is the best choice for long coastal runs and heavy loads. An electric outboard is silent, clean and almost maintenance free, and it is welcome on lakes and in marinas that restrict fuel. The efficient twin hull of the Takacat 380 S for sale makes the most of a battery. Some owners run a petrol motor for coastal trips and swap to electric for quiet lake days.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Running with a soft floor. Pump it to 10 psi with the gauge.
- Fitting more motor than the plate allows.
- Loading gear at the stern. Move weight forward for better trim.
- Rolling it up wet for long storage.
- Dragging it over rocks instead of lifting or using wheels.
Care and Maintenance
- Rinse with fresh water after salt water use.
- Dry fully before packing.
- Keep it shaded and use UV protectant on PVC.
- Release a little air on very hot days.
- Check valves, oarlocks and under tube rubber each season.
- Carry the repair kit aboard.
- Service your outboard on time.
For winter, wash, dry and store the Takacat 380 S for sale loosely rolled in a cool, dry place, and service the motor so both are ready in spring.
Safety on the Water
Carry a life jacket for every person, a bailer, a horn or whistle, a light and an anchor. Rules on registration and safety gear differ by country and region, so check yours. Respect the capacity plate and let someone know your plans. Learn more about the Sport and LX ranges on the official Takacat website.
Takacat Warranty
PVC and Hypalon tubes carry a 3 year warranty against defects and deterioration that affect usability, such as ageing, cracking or delamination. Air filling pipe seams carry 2 years. Parts and equipment, including the high pressure deck, carry handles, D rings, bow, seat, lid, paddles and oars, are covered for 2 years from purchase against defects in material and structure.
