Sport or LX: What Is the Difference?
Takacat builds each size in two styles. The LX has an open bow closed only by straps. It is the easiest boat in the world to step off onto a beach or climb back into from the water. The Sport, marked S, has a closed bow that tapers to a point.
That closed bow does two things. It splits small waves and turns spray aside, so passengers stay drier when you head into a chop. It also gives the boat the classic look of a traditional tender, which many yacht owners prefer.
Below the bow, the boats are the same. You get the twin tube catamaran hull, the raised air floor, the removable stainless Tube Transom and the tough under tube rubber. If you mainly cross open bays or run into the wind, choose the Sport. If you mainly beach, dive or swim, choose the LX. The Takacat 340 LX is the open bow twin of this boat.
How the Catamaran Hull Works
Most inflatables use one V hull. It pushes water to the sides, rolls as people move, and needs plenty of power to plane. The Takacat sits on two tubes with a tunnel in between. Water flows through the tunnel instead of being pushed away, so the boat needs less power and stays level.
The twin tubes track like rails, which makes steering easy and towing straightforward. At speed, air is trapped in the tunnel and cushions the ride. At rest, the wide stance resists rolling. The design came from Thundercat surf racing boats and was refined by founder Greg Sowden in Auckland, New Zealand. Takacat launched in 2007 and has since sold more than 10,000 boats worldwide.
Features of the Takacat 340 S for sale
Closed, tapered bow
The bow meets waves at an angle and splits them. Spray goes sideways, not into the boat. It is also a handy spot to stow a bow bag, anchor or dry bag.
Removable Tube Transom
The stern is a stainless frame that slides out of the tubes for packing. With the stern open, water drains straight out, so the deck never floods in rain or under tow.
Locking oarlocks
Fold down oarlocks lock in place for rowing and fold flat when you are under power. Oar holders keep the oars tidy.
Raised air floor
The 10 psi floor sits above the water and gives a firm deck to stand on.
Built for real use
A rubbing strake protects the sides, grab lines give passengers and swimmers something to hold, and rubber under the tubes resists abrasion from beaches and ramps.
Who Buys the Takacat 340 S for sale
Owners of mid size yachts
On a 30 to 40 foot yacht, the 340 S is a near perfect tender. It carries four ashore with shopping, tows straight, and packs into a locker on passage. The closed bow keeps everyone dry on choppy anchorage runs.
Coastal day boaters
If you cross open bays to reach beaches and fishing spots, the dry ride of the Sport bow makes the trip more pleasant.
Anglers
Two or three anglers can fish from the stable, flat deck. The shallow draft opens up water bigger boats cannot reach.
Travelers and campers
The boat packs into two bags, so it goes on holiday in the car or in a motorhome storage bay.
Choosing an Outboard for the Takacat 340 S for sale
Our listing rates the 340 S for up to 15 hp on a short shaft. Typical choices are:
- 2.5 to 4 hp for a light, economical tender at displacement speed.
- 6 to 8 hp to plane with one aboard and cruise efficiently with two.
- 9.9 hp to plane with two or three. A balanced, popular pick.
- 15 hp for full loads and lively performance.
Lighter motors are easier to lift onto the transom from a yacht or a beach. Always check the capacity plate for maximum power and engine weight.
Browse matching motors: Tohatsu 4 HP outboards, Mercury 8 HP outboards, Suzuki 9.9 HP outboards and Yamaha 15 HP outboards. For fuel free running, see our Torqeedo electric motors. We can quote the Takacat 340 S for sale with a motor as a package.
How the Takacat 340 S Performs
The 340 S planes easily for its size thanks to its waterline length and low drag hull. It stays level, so you can see ahead and passengers sit comfortably. Steering is light because the twin hulls hold their line.
Into a chop, the closed bow is where the Sport earns its name. It slices through small waves and keeps spray down. The tunnel under the deck cushions the landings. Any water that does come aboard drains out through the open transom.
At rest, the boat sits steady for fishing, swimming or a picnic. Rowing is easy with the locking oarlocks, and the boat tows straight behind a yacht.
Setting Up the Takacat 340 S for sale
There are no floorboards to fit. With the manual pump, expect about 8 to 15 minutes. With an electric pump, about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Inflate the tubes to 3 psi.
- Slide the Tube Transom bars into the sleeves. Soapy water helps.
- Fit the motor boards with the supplied eye bolt.
- Insert the floor and pump to 10 psi.
- Fold up the oarlocks and fit the oars.
- Mount the outboard.
- Check life jackets, light, rules and weather.
To pack, reverse the steps. Deflate the floor, slide out the transom, roll the tubes and fill the two bags.
Storage and Transport
Packed, the 340 S fits in a car boot, a sail locker or a cupboard. There is no trailer to buy, register or store, and no ramp fee to pay. For regular beach use, quick release wheels let you roll the inflated boat to the water.
Build Quality
Standard tubes are welded from durable 0.9 mm, 1000 denier PVC. Hypalon tubes are available for owners in strong sun who want the longest service life. Pressure relief valves protect against heat expansion. The transom is 304 stainless and the motor board is waterproof plywood. Takacats 2.5 m and up carry CE certification and are built to ISO 6185 2.
Easy, Affordable Re Tubing
On a traditional inflatable, the transom is glued in, so worn tubes usually mean buying a whole new boat. On a Takacat, you order new tubes and slide in your existing transom and floor. That keeps the Takacat 340 S for sale useful and valuable for many years.

340 S or 380 S? The 380 S is longer, seats six and takes up to 20 hp. Pick it for bigger crews and heavier loads. Pick the 340 S if lighter weight and a smaller pack size matter more.
340 S or 300 S? The 300 S is a compact tender. The 340 S adds length and a fifth seat, planes better with a load, and makes a far better day boat.
Getting the Best Ride in Chop
The closed bow does a lot of work for you, but a few habits help:
- Move weight forward when heading into waves so the bow does not lift and catch the wind.
- Ease off the throttle in a short, steep chop and let the boat ride over each wave.
- Quarter into bigger waves at a slight angle rather than hitting them head on.
- Running downwind, keep a little speed on so you stay ahead of the waves.
- Keep passengers low and central in rough patches.
The Takacat 340 S for sale is built for inshore and coastal use. Watch the forecast and stay within your experience.
As a Yacht Tender
Many owners buy the 340 S purely as a tender. It tows straight thanks to the twin hulls and never fills with water thanks to the open transom. Clip a floating tow line to the bow D rings and remove or tilt the motor on longer tows.
At anchor, it carries four people and a load of provisions ashore in one trip, and the closed bow keeps the shopping dry on the way back. On passage, deflate it and roll it into a cockpit locker, which keeps the deck clear and the tender safe.
If your yacht has davits, the low weight makes lifting easy. Attach the falls to the bow D rings and the transom and lift evenly.
A Cruising Weekend With the Takacat 340 S for sale
Friday evening, the yacht leaves the marina with the Takacat rolled in the cockpit locker. Saturday morning you anchor in a quiet bay. Out come the two bags. On the foredeck you inflate the tubes, slide in the transom, pump up the floor and lower the boat over the side on a halyard. The 4 hp goes on the transom and the crew climbs aboard.
The run to the beach is into a light breeze. The closed bow throws the small chop aside and the crew arrives dry. You row the last few metres to keep the propeller out of the sand, step out over the side, and carry the light boat up above the tide line.
After lunch you head out to fish the point. Two of you cast from the steady deck while the third keeps an eye on the anchor. Back at the yacht in the evening, the boat trails behind on a short line overnight. Sunday afternoon it is rinsed, dried on deck and rolled away before the passage home. That is what a good tender should do: work hard and then disappear.
Boarding a Closed Bow Boat
Because the Sport bow is closed, you board over the side like a traditional inflatable. A few tips make it easy:
- From a dock, step into the centre of the floor, not onto a tube, and keep low.
- From a yacht, hold the grab line and lower yourself onto the floor near the transom.
- From the water, use the grab lines and kick up over the tube near the stern, where the boat is most stable. A small boarding ladder clipped to a D ring helps.
- From a beach, pull the bow up onto the sand and step in over the side near the front.
If you dive or swim a lot, the open bow of the LX makes re entry easier. For everyone else, the drier ride of the Takacat 340 S for sale is the bigger win.
PVC or Hypalon Tubes?
PVC is the standard choice. It is light, strong, simple to repair and good value. Kept out of strong sun when stored, PVC tubes last many seasons.
Hypalon costs more and weighs a little more, but it shrugs off UV, heat, fuel and abrasion. If you cruise in the tropics, leave the tender inflated on deck for months, or want the longest life, Hypalon is worth the extra. Ask us about Hypalon availability on the Takacat 340 S for sale.
Petrol or Electric?
A small four stroke gives the most range and speed per dollar and refuels anywhere. An electric outboard is silent, clean and almost maintenance free, and many lakes and marinas welcome it. The low drag catamaran hull gets more range from a battery than a heavy monohull tender would. Many cruisers now pair the 340 S with an electric motor for short tender runs, charged from the yacht’s solar panels.
Tips for First Time Owners
- Do a full setup at home before your first trip so you know where everything goes.
- Mark the transom bars left and right with tape to speed up assembly.
- Keep the pressure gauge with the pump so you always hit 3 psi in the tubes and 10 psi in the floor.
- Practise rowing on calm water. It is your backup if the motor stops.
- Write your name and phone number inside a tube with a marine marker in case the boat drifts away.
Useful Accessories
- Electric pump for faster setup.
- Quick release beach wheels.
- Bow bag that sits neatly in the closed bow.
- Anchor kit with chain and line.
- Seat cushion and a cooler.
- Navigation light for dusk runs.
Popular Setups
Classic tender. 4 hp four stroke, bow bag and tow line. Dry runs from the anchorage to the dock.
Bay fishing boat. 9.9 hp tiller, rods, anchor and cooler. Planes with two anglers.
Coastal explorer. 15 hp, safety kit and a dry bag. Fun, fast and dry across open water.
Silent lake boat. Torqeedo electric outboard and spare battery.
Fishing From the Takacat 340 S for sale
The closed bow is a bonus for anglers who fish open bays. You arrive at the spot dry, then drop anchor from the bow D ring so the boat swings head to wind. The flat deck gives two anglers room to stand and cast, and the twin hulls keep the boat level when someone leans out to net a fish. Strap a cooler to the floor as a seat, add clamp on rod holders, and you have a capable small fishing boat that still rolls into the car boot.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Running with a soft floor. Pump to 10 psi.
- Fitting too much motor. Respect the plate.
- Loading weight at the back.
- Storing the boat wet.
- Dragging it over rock and shell.
Care and Maintenance
- Rinse with fresh water after salt water use.
- Dry fully before packing.
- Keep it shaded and use UV protectant on PVC.
- Release a little air on very hot days.
- Check valves, oarlocks and under tube rubber each season.
- Carry the repair kit.
- Service your outboard on schedule.
Over winter, store the Takacat 340 S for sale loosely rolled somewhere cool and dry, safe from rodents.
Safety on the Water
Carry a life jacket for everyone, a bailer, horn or whistle, light and anchor. Registration and equipment rules vary by country and region, so check yours. Stay within the capacity plate and tell someone your plans. For more on the Sport range, visit the official Takacat website.
Takacat Warranty
PVC and Hypalon tubes have a 3 year warranty against defects and deterioration that affect usability, such as ageing, cracking or delamination. Air filling pipe seams have 2 years. Parts and equipment, including the high pressure deck, carry handles, D rings, bow, seat, lid, paddles and oars, are covered for 2 years from purchase against defects in material and structure.
