Description
We have the Takacat 460 LX for sale, the biggest boat in the Takacat LX range. It is a 15 foot 1 inch inflatable catamaran rated for eight people, with oversized 22 inch tubes and the removable Tube Transom that made Takacat famous. It is new, it comes with the Takacat warranty, and we ship worldwide.
Most inflatables this size need a trailer and a ramp. This one rolls up into two bags and fits in the back of an SUV. This page covers the full specifications, how the boat is built, which outboard to pair with it, setup, care, delivery and the questions buyers ask us most.

What Makes the Takacat 460 LX Different
A normal inflatable has one V shaped hull. It pushes water aside, rolls when people move around, and squats at the back under power. A Takacat runs on two separate tubes, like a small racing catamaran. Water passes between the hulls instead of being shoved out of the way. The result is less drag, a level ride, and far more stability when you stand up to cast a line or haul a diver aboard.
The design came from Thundercat surf racing boats. Greg Sowden, the founder, spent years testing prototypes in Auckland, New Zealand before the first Takacat went on sale in 2007. Today there are well over 10,000 of them in use around the world, from yacht tenders in the Mediterranean to rescue boats on flooded rivers.
The 460 LX takes that idea to its largest size. The tubes are 22 inches across, compared with 19 inches on the smaller LX boats. Bigger tubes mean more buoyancy, a drier ride in chop, and a higher deck that keeps feet out of spray. Each tube is split into two air chambers, so a puncture in one section does not take the boat down.
The Removable Tube Transom
This is the feature people ask about first. On most inflatables the wooden or composite transom is glued in. It is heavy, it does not fold, and it is the reason the boat never quite fits in the bag.
On the Takacat 460 LX for sale here, the transom is a stainless steel frame that slides into sleeves in the tubes. When you pack up, you pull it out. The tubes then roll flat and light. When you set up, you slide it back in and bolt on the motor board.
The open back has a second benefit. Water cannot pool on deck because there is nowhere for it to sit. Spray, rain and wash run straight out. That matters when you tow the boat behind a yacht or run home through a short, steep chop.
The Open Bow
The LX series has an open bow, closed only by webbing straps between the D rings. It sounds odd until you use it. You can step off onto a beach or a dock without climbing over a tube. Swimmers and divers can crawl back in from the front, which is far easier than hauling yourself over the side. In a rescue or man overboard situation, that easy re entry is a real safety feature.
If you prefer a closed, tapered bow for a drier ride in open water, look at the Sport series. Our Takacat 380 S is the largest Sport model.
Who Buys the Takacat 460 LX for sale
Fishing and diving crews
The flat deck and wide beam make this a steady platform for four anglers or a dive team with tanks. Because the boat does not roll much, you can move around without everyone shifting their weight to compensate. The open bow makes it easy to pull divers back aboard.
Yacht and motorhome owners
Some owners want a big tender that still stores in a locker. The 460 LX carries a full crew ashore in one trip, then packs down for the passage. RV and camper owners use it the same way, keeping a real boat in two bags instead of towing a trailer.
Rescue and support teams
With 4 + 1 chambers, a raised floor and an open stern that sheds water, the 460 LX suits flood rescue, safety cover for rowing and sailing clubs, and coaching. Takacat itself lists these uses for the LX range.
Families and groups
Eight seats means the whole family goes in one boat. The catamaran hull also feels calm for nervous passengers, because it sits flat instead of tipping as people climb in.
Choosing an Outboard for the Takacat 460 LX for sale
This boat is sold without a motor. Our listing covers 20 hp to 30 hp, and the capacity plate on your boat is the final word on maximum power and engine weight. A few notes from experience:
- 20 hp is a sensible match for most buyers. It gets the boat on the plane with a moderate load and keeps weight down at the stern.
- 25 to 30 hp suits heavy loads, rescue work or regular use with six to eight people aboard.
- Short shaft is the usual choice. Check the transom height with us before you order.
- Electric start and tiller are both common. A tiller keeps the deck clear, which suits fishing.
We stock new and used outboards in this power band. Browse Suzuki 20 HP outboards, Yamaha 25 HP outboards, Mercury 30 HP outboards or Tohatsu 20 HP outboards. If you want silent running, our Torqeedo electric motors pair well with the efficient catamaran hull. Ask us for a boat and motor package price on the Takacat 460 LX for sale.
How the Takacat 460 LX for sale Performs on the Water
Twin hulls track straight. Many inflatables wander under oars or at low speed, but a Takacat holds its line because it has two long, parallel keels in the water. That also makes it tow well behind a larger boat.
Under power, the 460 LX lifts onto the plane quickly for its size thanks to its long waterline. The tunnel between the tubes traps a cushion of air at speed, which softens the ride. In a crosswind or chop, the big 22 inch tubes keep the deck higher and drier than a smaller inflatable.
The shallow draft is another plus. You can run into knee deep water and get closer to the beach before the hull touches, where a V hull would ground further out. The underside of each tube has heavy duty rubber protection for beaching.
And yes, it rows. The boat comes with two oars, and the low drag hull makes rowing a short distance realistic, even at this size.
Setting Up the Takacat 460 LX for sale
There are no heavy floorboards to slot together. With the supplied manual pump, setup takes about 8 to 15 minutes on the largest models depending on your fitness. An electric pump cuts that to about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Inflate the main tubes to 3 psi.
- Slide in the Tube Transom bars. A little soapy water on the sleeves makes this much easier.
- Fit the motor mount transom boards with the supplied eye bolt.
- Insert the floor and inflate it to 10 psi.
- Connect the bow D rings with the webbing straps.
- Fit the oars.
- Mount the outboard and connect fuel or battery.
- Check safety gear, local rules and the weather before you leave.
Packing up is the reverse. Remove the motor, deflate the floor, pull out the transom, and roll the tubes from front to back. The tubes go in one bag and the floor and transom in another.
Storage and Transport
Packed, the tubes roll to about 165 x 40 x 40 cm. That fits in a car boot, a yacht locker, a garage shelf or the storage bay of a motorhome. You avoid trailer registration, ramp fees and the space a hard boat takes up.
If you prefer to keep it inflated for the season, Takacat offers quick release wheel mounts, so one or two people can roll the boat down the beach. Many owners also carry the Takacat 460 LX for sale assembled in a pickup bed or trailer for short trips.
The Air Floor Doubles as a Paddle Board
The high pressure floor inflates to 10 psi and becomes stiff enough to stand on. On the 460 LX it comes with a fin, so when the boat is not in use you can take the floor out and paddle it as a stand up board. It is a small touch, but it gives the kids something to do while the adults fish.
Build Quality and Materials
Standard Takacat tubes are made from 0.9 mm, 1000 denier PVC. PVC is light, strong and affordable, and it suits most climates if you keep it out of the sun when stored. Hypalon tubes are available and handle heat, UV and fuel better over the long term, at a higher price and slightly more weight.
Pressure relief valves come standard to stop over inflation or heat expansion. A protective rubbing strake runs along the tubes. The transom is 304 stainless, and the motor mount is waterproof painted plywood. Takacat boats from 2.5 m upward carry CE certification and are built to ISO 6185 2.
Easy, Low Cost Re Tubing
Every inflatable eventually needs new tubes. On a glued transom boat, that often means a new boat. On a Takacat, you order a set of replacement tubes, slide the existing transom and floor into them, and you are back on the water. This is one of the strongest long term reasons to choose the Takacat 460 LX for sale over a conventional RIB.
Why the Takacat 460 LX for sale Is Good Value
Compare the full cost of ownership, not just the sticker price. A rigid boat of the same length needs a trailer, registration for that trailer, ramp fees, a parking spot and often a mooring. Many of those costs come back every year. The Takacat needs none of them.
Fuel use is lower too. The catamaran hull needs less power to reach planing speed than a heavy monohull, so a 20 hp motor does the work a bigger engine would do elsewhere. Smaller outboards cost less to buy, weigh less and burn less fuel.
Finally, resale is strong. Takacats hold their value because owners know the tubes can be replaced and the rest of the boat lasts. A well kept Takacat 460 LX for sale today will still be worth good money in five years.
Takacat 460 LX for sale vs Other Takacat Models
| Model | Length | Capacity | Tube | Outboard range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Takacat 460 LX | 15 ft 1 in | 8 people | 22 in | 20 to 30 hp |
| Takacat 420 LX | 13 ft 9 in | 7 people | 22 in | 6 to 25 hp |
| Takacat 380 LX | 12 ft 5 in | 6 people | 19 in | 2.5 to 20 hp |
| Takacat 340 LX | 11 ft 2 in | 5 people | 19 in | 2.5 to 15 hp |
| Takacat 300 LX | 9 ft 10 in | 4 people | 19 in | 2.5 to 10 hp |
| Takacat 260 LX | 8 ft 6 in | 3 people | 19 in | 2 to 8 hp |
Pick the 460 LX if you regularly carry six or more people, heavy gear, or need a work boat. If you mostly carry two to four people and value lighter weight, the 380 LX or 420 LX will be easier to handle alone.
Inflatable Catamaran or Aluminium Boat?
A 15 foot aluminium boat will carry a similar load, but it needs a trailer, a ramp and a place to park. It is also noisy in chop and hard on the knees. The 460 LX gives you most of the carrying capacity in a package you can store indoors and launch from a beach. For buyers without a driveway or a mooring, that is often the deciding factor.
An aluminium hull is tougher against rocks and oysters, and it does not need inflating. If you launch every day from the same ramp, a hard boat may suit you better. If you travel, live aboard, or have limited space, the Takacat wins.
Real World Setups for the Takacat 460 LX for sale
Dive boat. 25 hp four stroke, tank racks strapped to the D rings, anchor in the bow. Divers roll out over the side and climb back in over the open bow.
Family tender. 20 hp tiller, inflatable seat, cooler on deck. Carries the whole crew from the anchorage to the beach in one run.
Quiet lake boat. Torqeedo electric outboard and a spare battery. Silent, clean, and allowed on lakes with fuel restrictions.
Safety boat. 30 hp, throw bag, first aid kit and radio. Fast to launch, stable when pulling someone from the water.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Over powering. More horsepower than the plate allows makes the boat harder to handle and voids cover. Stay inside the rating.
- Under inflating the floor. A soft floor flexes and slows the boat. Use the gauge and pump it to 10 psi.
- Packing it wet. Rolling up a damp boat for weeks invites mildew. Dry it first, even if that means unrolling it at home.
- Dragging on gravel. The rubber strips protect the tubes, but lifting beats dragging. Fit the wheels if you beach launch often.
- Ignoring load trim. Spread heavy gear forward and to the centre so the bow stays down at low speed.
Through the Seasons
In summer, watch tube pressure in the heat and cover the boat when it sits on the beach. In autumn, it makes a dry, steady platform for fishing and hunting trips. Before winter storage, wash the boat, dry it fully, and store it rolled loosely in a cool, dry place away from rodents. Service the outboard at the same time so the Takacat 460 LX for sale is ready the first warm weekend of spring.
Care and Maintenance
- Rinse the tubes, transom and floor with fresh water after salt water use.
- Dry the boat fully before rolling it up to prevent mildew.
- Store out of direct sun when not in use, and use a UV protectant on PVC.
- Check tube pressure on hot days. The relief valves help, but let a little air out if the boat sits in the sun.
- Inspect the underside rubber after beaching on sharp rock or shell.
- Keep the repair kit aboard. Small pinholes are a five minute fix.
- Flush and service your outboard to the maker’s schedule.
Safety on the Water
Carry a life jacket for everyone aboard, a bailer, a light, a whistle or horn and an anchor. Check local rules for registration and required gear, as these differ by country and region. Never exceed the capacity plate. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. For more on Takacat design and the full range, see the official Takacat website.
Takacat Warranty
Both PVC and Hypalon tubes have a 3 year warranty against defects and deterioration that affect usability, such as ageing, cracking or delamination. Air filling pipe seams have a 2 year warranty. Parts and equipment, including the high pressure deck, carry handles, D rings, bow, seat, lid, paddles and oars, are covered against defects in material and structure for 2 years from purchase.
