What the Letters Mean

All these codes look alike at first. Once you know the system it takes two seconds to read one.

  • E25: Evinrude, 25 horsepower.
  • D: E-TEC generation.
  • R: rope start tiller model.
  • T: tiller with power trim (in DTSL and DGTL) or electric start tiller (in GTE and GTEL).
  • P: remote steering with power trim.
  • S: white paint. G: graphite.
  • L at the end: 20 inch long shaft. No L: 15 inch short shaft.

So the E25DRGL is a graphite rope start tiller with a 20 inch shaft. The E25DPSL is a white remote steer motor with power trim and a 20 inch shaft. If you want the full story on Evinrude codes and the other sizes, read our main Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale guide.

Which Evinrude 25 HP Outboard for Sale Fits Your Boat?

Three questions narrow it down fast.

1. How tall is your transom?

Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull, in the middle. About 15 inches means a short shaft (no L in the code). About 20 inches means a long shaft (L at the end). Most small aluminium boats and inflatables are 15 inch. Most 14 to 16 foot fishing boats and small skiffs are 20 inch. Get this right first. A wrong shaft length on an Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale is the most common mistake we see.

2. Tiller or console?

If you steer from the back of the boat with a handle, you want a tiller model. If your boat has a steering wheel and a throttle lever at a console, you want a remote model, the E25DPSL or E25DPGL. Remote models need steering and controls on the boat. If your boat had an Evinrude or Johnson before, your controls may plug straight in.

3. Rope start or electric?

Rope start models are lighter and cheaper and don’t need a battery. The E-TEC starts easily on the rope, usually first or second pull when it’s set up right. Electric start is nice if you’re older, have a sore shoulder, or start and stop a lot while fishing. The electric models still have a rope as backup.

Power trim is worth it on the bigger boats in this range. It lets you trim the bow up or down while running and tilt the motor up in shallow water without lifting it by hand. On a light jon boat, manual tilt is fine.

Boats That Suit a 25 HP Evinrude

Always check the capacity plate first, but here’s where an Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale usually ends up:

  • 12 to 16 foot jon boats and flat bottom river boats
  • 14 to 16 foot aluminium V-hull fishing boats
  • Rigid inflatable boats and larger inflatables with a hard floor
  • Small skiffs and dinghies used as yacht tenders
  • Canoes with a square stern and small work boats
  • Duck boats and small hunting boats

On a 14 foot aluminium boat with two people and gear, a 25 E-TEC gets on plane easily and cruises comfortably. On a 16 foot boat with a full load it still planes, just with a bit less to spare. If you regularly carry three or four adults, look at the Evinrude 30 HP instead. It’s the same block and almost the same weight.

How the E-TEC 25 Runs

A lot of people remember old two-strokes as smoky, loud and fussy at idle. The E-TEC 25 isn’t like that. Fuel is injected straight into each cylinder, and at low revs it runs a lean stratified mode, so it idles cleanly and trolls well without fouling plugs. Once it’s warm you won’t see smoke.

Where it really shines is pulling power. Two-strokes fire on every turn of the crank, so a 25 HP E-TEC feels strong off the line. It weighs less than many four-strokes of the same power, which helps a small boat sit level and plane sooner. If you want to understand why, the two-stroke engine article covers the basics.

Fuel use at cruise is good for a two-stroke. At full throttle it drinks more, like any motor. For most fishing and getting around, an Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale from our stock will use about what a comparable four-stroke does.

Evinrude 25 HP Outboard for Sale vs a 25 HP Four-Stroke

We sell both, so here’s an honest side by side.

  • Weight: the rope start E-TEC 25 is around 150 lb. Many four-stroke 25s weigh more.
  • Maintenance: no engine oil changes, no valve adjustments. You keep the oil tank filled.
  • Starting: E-TECs start very easily, even after sitting.
  • Noise: a four-stroke is quieter at idle.
  • Price: a used Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale costs noticeably less than a new four-stroke.

If a four-stroke suits you better, have a look at our Mercury 25 HP, Honda 25 HP, Yamaha 25 HP and Suzuki 25 HP motors.

25 HP vs 15 HP vs 30 HP

People often sit between sizes. Here’s how I’d think about it.

The 15 HP is lighter and fine for a small jon boat or tender with one or two people. It won’t plane a heavy boat well. The 25 is the sweet spot for most 14 to 16 foot boats. The 30 uses the same 577 cc block and weighs almost the same, so if your boat is rated for 30 and you carry a lot, it’s worth the small price difference. You can compare all three in our 15 HP, 25 HP and 30 HP categories.

What We Test on Every Evinrude 25 HP Outboard for Sale

Before any motor goes on the site we put it through the same checks:

  1. Compression on both cylinders. They should be close to each other.
  2. Read the engine computer for stored faults and total hours.
  3. Drain and check the gear oil for water or metal.
  4. Check the water pump output and the tell-tale stream.
  5. Run it in the test tank through the rev range, forward and reverse.
  6. Test the starter and power trim where fitted.
  7. Inspect the clamp bracket, tiller handle, anodes and cowl.

If you’re interested in a particular motor, ask and we’ll send photos of the actual unit and its serial plate. That way you know exactly which Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale you’re getting.

Getting the Prop Right

The E-TEC 25 should reach somewhere between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm at full throttle with a normal load. If it won’t get there, the prop pitch is too high. If it goes over, the pitch is too low. Most of these motors run a prop in the 9 to 11 inch pitch range, but it depends on the boat. Tell us your boat and typical load and we’ll suggest a starting point.

Looking After Your Evinrude 25 HP Outboard for Sale

Routine care on an Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale from us is simple:

  • Keep the oil tank topped up with XD-100.
  • Use fresh fuel and a water separating filter.
  • Change the gear oil once a season.
  • Replace the water pump impeller every two or three seasons.
  • Flush with fresh water after salt water use.
  • Check the anodes and replace them when half worn.
  • Use the built-in fogging mode before winter storage.

Parts for the 25 HP E-TEC are still easy to find. Evinrude stopped building outboards in 2020, but there are a lot of these motors around and the common service parts never went away. You can read the brand’s history on the Evinrude Outboard Motors page.

Is a Two-Stroke Allowed Where You Boat?

In most places, yes. The E-TEC 25 meets EPA 2013, CARB 3 star and European Union emissions rules, which is why it’s still allowed on many lakes that banned old carbureted two-strokes. A few lakes and reservoirs have their own rules, so check with your local authority if you’re unsure. For general boating safety rules, the US Coast Guard boating site is a good reference.

Buying Any Used Evinrude 25 HP Outboard for Sale: What to Check

Whether you buy from us or someone else, these are the things that separate a good used motor from a headache. We’d rather you know them.

  • Hours. The E-TEC computer stores total run time. Ask for it. A seller who can’t or won’t give it is a warning sign.
  • Compression. Both cylinders should be within about 10 percent of each other.
  • Gear oil. Milky oil means water is getting past a seal. Metal flakes mean gear wear.
  • Corrosion. Look under the cowl, around the bracket and on the lower unit. Heavy white crust on a motor that ran in salt water needs a close look.
  • Tell-tale stream. It should be steady when the motor runs. Weak flow usually means the impeller is due.
  • Oil tank and lines. Make sure the oil system has been used with the right oil and the tank isn’t full of old, dark sludge.

We check all of these before we list any Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale. If you’re looking at a motor somewhere else, use this list and ask the seller to show you.

Using a 25 HP Evinrude on a Tender

Yacht owners buy a lot of these. A 25 HP on a 3 to 4 metre rigid inflatable gets you to shore quickly with a couple of people and shopping, and it planes with a load that would leave a 15 HP struggling. The short shaft models (E25DRS, E25DRG and E25DGTE) suit most inflatable transoms. Check your tender’s rating first, since some small inflatables top out at 15 or 20 HP.

The rope start E25DRS and E25DRG are the lightest at about 150 lb. That still takes two people to move on and off the yacht, so a davit or crane helps. Rinse the motor with fresh water after use and tilt it up when the tender is tied off.

When the Crate Arrives

Check the packaging for damage before you sign for it. If something looks wrong, take photos and note it on the delivery paperwork. Unpack the motor carefully. Tiller models come with the handle attached or packed alongside. Remote models will need controls and steering connected on the boat.

Before the first start, fill the oil tank with XD-100, connect a fresh fuel line and squeeze the primer bulb until it’s firm. Run it on a flush muff or in the water, never dry. Your Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale should start within a few pulls or a couple of turns of the key. If it doesn’t, check the fuel line, the bulb and the kill switch lanyard first. A missing lanyard clip catches a lot of people.

Running Costs Over a Few Seasons

Here’s roughly what owning an Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale from us costs to keep running, apart from fuel. Oil is used slowly, especially at low speed. A gear oil change each year is cheap and quick. A water pump kit every two or three seasons. Spark plugs every so often. Anodes as they wear. That’s the list.

There are no engine oil changes, no oil filters, no valve adjustments and no timing belts. For a small motor that might sit unused for weeks between trips, that simplicity is a real advantage. Two-strokes also tend to cope better with occasional use than four-strokes, which can collect moisture in the crankcase oil.

Tiller Handle Details

The tiller models have a twist grip throttle, a shift lever on the side, a friction adjustment so the handle holds its position, and a kill switch with a lanyard. On the electric start tiller models the start button is on the handle. The power trim switch on the E25DTSL and E25DGTL sits on the handle too, which is handy when you’re running in shallow water and need to lift the motor a bit. Every tiller Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale we list has its handle checked for free play and smooth throttle movement.

Who Buys a 25 HP Evinrude From Us

Lots of different people. Weekend anglers with a 14 foot tinny. Hunters with a jon boat. Yacht owners looking for a strong tender motor. Fishing cooperatives and small ferry operators who need something they can fix in the field. Dealers who buy two or three at a time. If you’re buying several, ask us about combining them in one shipment.
