Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale: 15 to 135 HP, Proven Motors Ready to Ship
If you’re looking for an Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale, you’re in the right place. We keep a good run of E-TEC motors in stock, from little 15 HP tiller engines up to the 135 HP V6, and every one gets run in our shop before it goes on the site. We sell them to boat owners, fishing guides, rental outfits and dealers, and we ship worldwide.
I’ve been selling outboards for a long time and I still like the E-TEC. It’s a simple motor in the ways that matter. No oil changes, no valve adjustments, and it starts easily after sitting for a month. This page covers what we have, the specs for each size, what to check before you buy, and how ordering and delivery work. It’s long, so use the contents box to jump around.

What E-TEC Actually Means on an Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale
E-TEC is the name Evinrude gave its direct injection two-stroke system. The old carbureted two-strokes mixed fuel and oil before it went into the crankcase, and a good part of that mix went straight out the exhaust. That’s why they smoked and drank fuel.
The E-TEC works differently. A computer-controlled injector sprays fuel straight into the cylinder after the exhaust port closes. Hardly any fuel escapes unburned. At low speed the motor runs a stratified mode, which means it fires a small, rich pocket of fuel near the plug and leaves the rest of the cylinder lean. That’s where the good economy at trolling speed comes from.
Oil comes from a separate tank under the cowl or on the boat, and the engine computer meters it to each point that needs it. You fill the tank and that’s it. There’s no crankcase oil to change, no oil filter, no timing belt, and no valves to adjust. If you want the background on how two-strokes work in general, the two-stroke engine page explains it well.
For a buyer, the short version is this. An E-TEC gives you two-stroke punch and light weight without the smoke and the thirst. That’s why people still look for an Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale years after the factory shut.
Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale: Specifications by Size
These are the standard figures for each Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale we carry, grouped by engine family. Exact numbers can shift a little by model year, and we confirm the details on the plate of your motor before you pay.
| Model family | Cylinders | Displacement | Approx. weight | Shaft options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-TEC 25 / 30 | Inline 2 | 577 cc (35.2 cu in) | 150 to 187 lb (68 to 85 kg) | 15 or 20 in |
| E-TEC 40 / 50 / 60 | Inline 2 | 863 cc (52.7 cu in) | varies by start and trim | 20 in, some 25 in |
| E-TEC 75 / 90 | Inline 3 | 1.3 L (79.1 cu in) | varies by version | 20 or 25 in |
| E-TEC 105 Jet / 115 | V4, 60 degree | 1.7 L (105.4 cu in) | varies by version | 20 or 25 in |
| E-TEC 135 H.O. | V6, 60 degree | 2.6 L (158.2 cu in) | 418 lb (190 kg) | 20 or 25 in |
Things every E-TEC in this list has in common:
- Direct injection two-stroke with stratified low speed combustion
- Automatic oil injection, made for XD-100 or XD-50 oil
- Runs on regular 87 octane unleaded
- No break-in period and no scheduled dealer service for the first few years when new
- Electronic engine management that stores fault codes and run hours
How to Read an Evinrude Model Code
The letters after the horsepower tell you how the motor is set up. People get confused by these, so here’s the cheat sheet we use in the shop.
- E at the start means Evinrude.
- The number is horsepower. E25 is 25 HP, E135 is 135 HP.
- D usually marks the E-TEC generation in the code.
- H on the bigger motors marks the high output version.
- S means white paint. G means graphite (dark grey).
- T means tiller handle. P means power trim and tilt.
- L at the end is a 20 inch shaft. X is 25 inch. No letter usually means 15 inch.
- J on the 40, 60 and 105 means a jet drive unit instead of a prop.
- A 4 at the end means a four-stroke, which you’ll see on the small 3.5, 6, 9.8 and some 15 HP models.
So an E25DPGL is a 25 HP E-TEC with power trim, graphite paint and a 20 inch shaft. An E135HGX is a 135 HP high output in graphite with a 25 inch shaft. If a code doesn’t make sense to you, send it to us and we’ll explain it.
Picking the Right Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale for Your Boat
Before you pick any Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale, start with the plate on your transom. Every boat has a maximum horsepower rating, and you shouldn’t go over it. Most owners do best somewhere between 75 and 100 percent of that number. Too small and the boat struggles to get on plane with a load. Too big and you’re over the rating, which can be a problem for insurance and is unsafe. The US Coast Guard boating site has good plain-language safety info if you want to read up on capacity plates.
Then measure your transom height. A 15 inch transom takes a short shaft, 20 inch takes a long shaft, and 25 inch takes an extra long shaft. Get this wrong and the prop either sucks air or drags the cavitation plate under. Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the bottom of the hull at the center.
15 to 30 HP: small boats and tenders
These suit jon boats, small aluminium fishing boats, inflatables with a hard floor, and skiffs up to about 16 feet. The 25 and 30 share the same 577 cc block, so the 30 is a 25 with more fuel and timing. Tiller models are the most popular because many of these boats don’t have a console. We’ve written a full guide on the Evinrude 25 HP outboard for sale if that’s your size.
40 to 60 HP: the workhorse range
This is where you find motors for 16 to 18 foot fishing boats, small pontoons and work boats. All three share the 863 cc twin. The 40 and 60 also came as jet versions for shallow rivers. These sell fast because a lot of commercial users run them hard every day. See our 40 HP, 50 HP and 60 HP guides.
75 and 90 HP: mid-size boats
The three cylinder 1.3 litre motors are smooth and pull hard out of the hole. They go on 17 to 19 foot bass boats, deck boats and larger pontoons. The 90 is one of the most common E-TECs out there, which helps with parts. Read more on the 75 HP and 90 HP pages.
105 Jet, 115 and 135 HP: bigger hulls
The 105 Jet is a 1.7 litre V4 built for river boats that run in a few inches of water. The 115 uses the same V4 with a prop. The 135 H.O. is a V6 that weighs about the same as many four-stroke 115s, which is why bay boat and flats boat owners like it. We cover it in detail on the Evinrude 135 HP outboard for sale page, and the jet in our 105 HP guide.
What About the E-TEC G2?
The G2 was the second generation, launched in 2014. It has the angular cowl you could order in hundreds of colour panel combinations, integrated hydraulic steering, and digital controls. G2 models covered 115 to 300 HP.
We don’t list G2 motors on the site right now. Our stock is the first generation E-TEC, which is simpler to rig because it uses ordinary mechanical controls and cable or hydraulic steering on the boat. If you need a G2 for a particular boat, contact us and we’ll tell you honestly if we can find one.
Evinrude Stopped Making Outboards. Should That Worry You?
It’s a fair question, and most buyers ask it. BRP, the company that owned Evinrude, ended outboard production in 2020. You can read the history on the Evinrude Outboard Motors page.
Here’s what that means in practice. There are hundreds of thousands of E-TEC motors still running, and the parts business didn’t disappear. Common items like plugs, impellers, water pump kits, injectors, thermostats and lower unit seals are still easy to get, both from the factory network and from aftermarket suppliers. Independent mechanics who know E-TECs are around in most boating areas.
The upside for you is price. An Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale costs a lot less than a new four-stroke of the same power. For a lot of owners that difference pays for years of fuel. The downside is that you won’t get a new factory warranty. We deal with that by testing every motor and being straight about its condition.
What We Check Before We List an Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale
Every motor goes through the same routine before we put it on the site as an Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale. Nothing fancy, just the things that tell you whether an outboard is healthy.
- Compression test on every cylinder. We want the numbers close to each other.
- Connect to the engine computer and read stored faults and total hours.
- Check the lower unit oil for water or metal.
- Look at the water pump and check the tell-tale stream.
- Run it in a test tank, through the rev range, in forward and reverse.
- Check power trim and tilt on the models that have it.
- Look over the bracket, anodes and cowl for corrosion or damage.
When you ask about a motor, we can send you photos of the actual unit and its model plate. We’d rather you know exactly what’s coming before it ships.
Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale or a Four-Stroke?
We sell both, so I’ve no reason to push one over the other. Here’s how they compare in real use.
- Weight. The E-TEC is lighter in most sizes. On small boats and flats boats that matters a lot.
- Hole shot. Two-strokes make strong torque at low revs. The E-TEC gets heavy boats on plane quickly.
- Maintenance. No oil changes, valves or timing belts. You do have to keep the oil tank topped up.
- Fuel. At trolling and cruise speed the E-TEC is very good. At wide open throttle a modern four-stroke usually uses a little less.
- Noise. Four-strokes are quieter at idle. The E-TEC has a bit more of a two-stroke sound but no smoke once it’s warm.
- Cost. A used E-TEC costs much less up front.
If you want to compare, we also stock Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Mercury outboards.
Oil, Fuel and Storage for Your Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale
Whichever Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale you choose, use a proper E-TEC rated oil. XD-100 is the one Evinrude recommended for most motors. Don’t use cheap TC-W3 oil in an E-TEC unless your motor has been set up for it, because the oiling rate is programmed for the synthetic.
Regular 87 octane unleaded is fine. Keep the fuel fresh and use a water separating filter on the boat. Most problems we see on returned E-TECs from other sellers come down to bad fuel or water in the tank, not the engine itself.
For winter storage, the E-TEC has a built-in fogging mode. You start it, trigger the mode, and it fogs itself and shuts down. It takes about five minutes. Your operator guide explains how, and we can talk you through it too.
Running an E-TEC in Salt Water
Plenty of buyers take an Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale from us and run it in salt water, and the E-TEC handles it well if you look after it. Flush the motor with fresh water after every trip. Check and replace the anodes when they’re half gone. Tilt it fully up when the boat is moored so the lower unit isn’t sitting in the water. Grease the swivel bracket and steering points every couple of months. That’s it.
The BoatUS site has some good articles on corrosion and engine care if you’re new to salt water boating.
Buying an Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale From Us
We’ve been in this trade more than 20 years. You’ll talk to people who work on outboards, not a call centre reading a script. A few things you can count on when you buy an Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale here:
- The motor you see is tested before it’s listed.
- We confirm horsepower, shaft length, steering and start type for the exact unit before you pay.
- We’ll tell you if we think a motor is wrong for your boat.
- We pack each motor on a pallet or in a crate so it travels safely.
You can see what other buyers have said on our reviews page, and learn a bit more about us on the about page.
Who Usually Buys an Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale
Our buyers are a mixed bunch, and that tells you a lot about the motor. Fishing guides like the E-TEC because it gets a loaded boat up fast and doesn’t need an oil change halfway through the season. Rental and resort operators like that it has fewer parts to wear out. Small commercial users, the people running ferries, fish carriers and work skiffs, like that the two-stroke keeps pulling when it’s old and tired.
Then there are private owners repowering an older boat. Plenty of hulls from the 1990s and 2000s came with Evinrude or Johnson motors, so the bolt pattern, controls and steering often match. Hanging a tested Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale on one of those boats is usually cheaper and simpler than switching brands, because you can keep a lot of the rigging.
Dealers and mechanics buy from us too, sometimes several motors at once. If you need more than one, ask us. We can group them in one shipment, which brings the delivery cost per motor down.
Check Your Boat Before You Order
A few minutes with a tape measure saves a lot of trouble. Here’s what we ask every buyer to check before they commit to an Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale:
- Max HP and weight rating on the capacity plate.
- Transom height, measured at the center, to pick a 15, 20 or 25 inch shaft.
- Steering: tiller, cable or hydraulic. Tiller motors come with the handle; remote motors need steering on the boat.
- Controls: if your old motor was an Evinrude or Johnson, your existing controls may work. If not, budget for a new control box and cables.
- Battery: electric start motors need a marine cranking battery in good shape.
- Fuel line and tank: replace old hoses and the primer bulb. Cracked lines cause more breakdowns than anything else.
Send us those details and we’ll match you to the right Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale. If nothing in stock suits your boat, we’ll tell you rather than sell you the wrong motor.
Rigging and First Start
When your motor arrives, check the crate for damage before the driver leaves and take photos if anything looks wrong. Mount the motor centered on the transom at the right height. As a rough rule, the cavitation plate should sit level with the bottom of the hull or a little above it. Bolt it through the transom, not just with the clamp screws, on anything bigger than a small tiller motor.
Fill the oil tank with E-TEC oil, connect a fresh fuel line, prime the bulb until it’s firm, and connect the battery. Run it on a flush muff or in the water, never dry. Let it warm up and check for a steady tell-tale stream. After that, take it out at moderate speed for the first trip and see how it pulls. If the revs at full throttle are way under or over the 5,500 to 6,000 range most E-TECs want, you need a different prop pitch. We’re happy to help you work that out.
A properly rigged Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale from our stock should start and run like it did in our test tank. If something doesn’t feel right after rigging, call us before you go chasing parts. Most first-start issues are a pinched fuel line, air in the system, or a loose battery cable.
What an Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale Really Costs to Own
The price tag is only part of it. Here’s what owning one looks like over a few seasons. Oil is the main running cost after fuel, and the E-TEC uses it slowly at cruise. A water pump impeller every couple of seasons, plugs now and then, lower unit oil once a year, and anodes when they wear. That’s about it for routine work.
Compare that to a four-stroke, where you add oil and filter changes, valve checks on some models, and a timing belt at intervals. Over five years the savings add up, on top of the lower purchase price of a used Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale.

Common Questions About Buying an Evinrude E-TEC Outboard for Sale
Are these motors new or used?
They’re used motors that we test in our shop before listing. Evinrude stopped production in 2020, so any Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale today is either old dealer stock or a used motor. We’re upfront about which is which.
Can I still get parts?
Yes. Service parts for the first generation E-TEC are widely available. Plugs, water pumps, filters, anodes and lower unit parts are all easy to find.
Do you ship to my country?
Almost certainly. We ship worldwide. Send us your location and we’ll quote it.
What oil does it need?
An E-TEC approved oil like XD-100. We’ll tell you what your specific motor was set up for.
Can I swap my old motor for an E-TEC?
Usually. Shaft length and steering need to match, and you may need new controls. Tell us what’s on the boat now and we’ll help you plan the repower.
How long will an E-TEC last?
A looked-after E-TEC can run well past 1,500 hours. Heavy commercial motors often go further. Fuel quality and how it’s stored matter more than anything.

Final Word
A good E-TEC is still one of the best value motors you can hang on a boat. It’s light, it’s strong off the line, and it doesn’t ask for much. The trick is buying one that’s been checked properly, from someone who’ll tell you the truth about it.
That’s what we try to do with every Evinrude E-TEC outboard for sale on this site. Have a look through the stock, and if you have a question or want a shipping quote, get in touch. We usually reply the same day. For general boating advice, Discover Boating is a handy place to start too.
