Description
Looking for an Evinrude outboard motor for sale? This page is our guide to every used Evinrude we have in stock, from the 3.5 HP portable to the 135 HP V6. Each motor is tested in our shop before it is listed, and we ship worldwide.
Evinrude stopped building outboards in 2020, so the only way to buy one now is used. That is not a bad thing. Evinrude E-TEC motors are light, strong and simple to maintain, and a tested used motor costs a fraction of a new four stroke of the same power. Below you will find the full stock list, a plain guide to the different engine families and the questions to ask before you buy.

Why Buy a Used Evinrude Outboard Motor for Sale Today
BRP, the company that owned Evinrude, ended outboard production in 2020. Thousands of E-TEC motors are still running on boats all over the world, and parts are still easy to get from BRP and independent suppliers. Mechanics everywhere know these engines.
For a repower on an older boat, a used Evinrude makes a lot of sense. A new four stroke of the same power often costs several times as much once rigging is added, and it may weigh more than an older transom was built for. A tested used Evinrude outboard motor for sale gives you proven power for much less money.
E-TEC Direct Injection Explained
Most Evinrude motors we sell are E-TEC two strokes. Instead of a carburettor, each cylinder has a fuel injector that sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber. At low speed the engine runs in a lean, stratified mode, which keeps idle and trolling clean and economical.
The practical benefits are easy starting, strong low end torque, no smoke and fuel use close to a modern four stroke. There are no valves to adjust and no crankcase oil to change. Two stroke oil comes from a separate reservoir and is metered automatically, so you never mix fuel by hand. Evinrude designed the E-TEC to go a long time between dealer services, often quoted as three years or 300 hours of normal use.
The Small Evinrude Four Strokes
From 3.5 to 15 HP, Evinrude also sold simple carburettor four strokes built by Tohatsu. Their model codes end in 4, such as the E3RG4, E6RG4, E10RG4 and E15RG4. They have an oil sump like a car engine, no electronics to diagnose and parts that are shared with Tohatsu, which makes them easy to keep running anywhere.
Evinrude Engine Families at a Glance
Portable E-TEC 15 HO
The 15 HO uses the 578 cc twin from the E-TEC 25 and 30, tuned to 15 HP. It has far more torque than a typical 15 and came with power trim as standard. See for example the Evinrude E15HPGL for sale.
E-TEC 25 and 30
The 25 and 30 share a 577 cc twin introduced in 2009. They weigh about 150 to 187 lb depending on start and trim, and suit aluminium boats, skiffs and RIBs. See for example the Evinrude E25DPSL for sale.
E-TEC 40, 50 and 60
These share an 864 cc inline twin of about 240 lb. They are light for the power, which makes them a favourite for repowering older hulls and small pontoons. See for example the Evinrude E50DPGL for sale.
E-TEC 75, 90 and 60 HO
These use the 1.3 litre three cylinder block of about 320 lb. Smooth and strong, they suit pontoons, bay boats and bowriders. See for example the Evinrude E90DPGL for sale.
E-TEC 90 HO and 105 Jet
The high output 90 and the 105 jet use the 1.7 litre V4 block. The jet version runs in very shallow rivers where a propeller would not survive. See for example the Evinrude E90HGL for sale.
E-TEC 135 V6
The 135 uses a 2.6 litre V6, a lot of engine for the power. It pushes heavy centre consoles and large pontoons with ease. See for example the Evinrude E135HSL for sale.
How to Choose the Right Evinrude Outboard Motor for Sale
Start with the capacity plate on your boat. It gives the maximum horsepower and weight the hull is built for. Stay within both. Then think about how you use the boat:
- Tenders, dinghies and canoes: 3.5 to 6 HP four strokes.
- Small aluminium boats and kicker motors: 9.8 to 15 HP.
- Fishing boats from about 4 to 5 m: 25 to 40 HP.
- Bass boats, small pontoons and repowers: 40 to 60 HP.
- Pontoons, bay boats and bowriders: 75 to 90 HP.
- Heavy centre consoles and large pontoons: 135 HP.
- Shallow rocky rivers: the 105 jet.
If you are between sizes, the bigger motor usually works less hard and lasts longer, as long as the boat is rated for it. Send us your boat details and we will recommend a model.
Reading an Evinrude Model Code
Evinrude codes start with E and the horsepower. A trailing 4 means a four stroke. On E-TEC models, an H right after the horsepower marks a high output version. G means graphite paint and S means white. R means rope start, T tiller steering, E electric start and P power trim and tilt. The last letter shows the shaft: L for 20 inches, X for 25 inches, and no letter for 15 inches. Other letters mark the series and options. On every Evinrude outboard motor for sale here, we confirm the full model and serial plate with a photo before you pay.
Shaft Length and Transom Fit
Measure your transom height at the centre, from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull. About 15 inches suits a short shaft, about 20 inches a long shaft and about 25 inches an extra long shaft. The wrong shaft causes cavitation or drag, so send us your measurement and we will match it.
How We Test Every Evinrude Outboard Motor for Sale
- Compression checked on every cylinder.
- Water pump and tell tale stream checked on a test tank.
- Gearcase oil drained and checked for water.
- Shifting, throttle and trim checked through the full range.
- On E-TEC models, oil injection cycled and the engine read with Evinrude diagnostics.
A motor that fails any of these checks goes to our rebuild bench, not the shop. Ask and we will send the readings for the motor you are interested in, plus a running video.
Parts and Service After 2020
BRP kept supplying Evinrude parts after production ended, and independent suppliers stock impellers, thermostats, injectors, sensors and gearcase parts. Small four strokes share most parts with Tohatsu. Owner guides are available on the BRP operator guides site. When you order parts, give the full model code and serial number from the bracket plate.
Maintenance Basics
- Flush with fresh water after every salt or dirty water trip.
- E-TEC: keep the oil reservoir topped up with XD-100 oil.
- Four strokes: change engine oil once a season.
- Change the gear oil every season and check for milky oil.
- Replace the water pump impeller every two to three seasons.
- Check anodes, plugs and fuel filters.
Most owners do these jobs themselves with basic tools.
Fuel and Storage
Use fresh 87 octane petrol and a stabiliser if the motor will sit for more than a few weeks. Ethanol fuel left in a motor over winter causes most starting problems. Before a long lay-up, follow the storage procedure in the owner guide: E-TEC motors can fog themselves automatically, and carburettor four strokes should be run dry. Change the gear oil, grease the fittings and store the motor upright in a dry place.
Questions to Ask Before Buying Any Used Outboard
Ask for compression readings, a photo of the model and serial plate, a running video with a strong tell tale stream and the condition of the gear oil. Ask when the impeller was last replaced. A seller who cannot answer is asking you to take a risk. We answer all of these for every Evinrude outboard motor for sale on our site.
Every Evinrude Outboard Motor for Sale, Size by Size
Here is what each size does best, so you can narrow the list before you look at individual models.
3.5 HP
The smallest Evinrude four stroke weighs about 18 kg and has its own fuel tank. It is ideal for a yacht tender or a canoe, and you can carry it in one hand. If you only need to potter across a harbour, a 3.5 HP Evinrude outboard motor for sale is all you need.
6 HP
The 6 HP four stroke adds a proper reverse gear and runs from a separate tank. It suits small aluminium boats, hard tenders and sailboat auxiliaries, and it is still light enough to carry to the boat.
9.8 HP
The 9.8 HP four stroke is a smooth twin cylinder motor of about 37 to 42 kg. It is popular as a kicker for trolling beside a bigger engine and as the main motor on 3.5 to 4 m boats.
15 HP
At 15 HP you can choose between the simple four stroke and the E-TEC 15 HO. The four stroke is easy to service anywhere. The HO has far more torque and power trim as standard, which helps loaded boats. Either way, a 15 HP Evinrude outboard motor for sale is one of the most versatile sizes we stock.
25 and 30 HP
The E-TEC 25 and 30 share one twin cylinder block. They plane a 4 to 5 m aluminium boat with gear aboard and are light enough for older transoms. Rope start, electric start, tiller and remote versions are all common.
40 and 50 HP
The 40 and 50 share the 864 cc E-TEC twin at about 240 lb. They are the go-to size for bass boats, small pontoons and repowers where weight matters. A 40 or 50 HP Evinrude outboard motor for sale is often the best value repower we offer.
60 HP
Evinrude made two kinds of 60: the light twin cylinder standard model and the high output version built on the bigger three cylinder block. Pick the standard model for light hulls and the HO for pontoons or heavy loads.
75 and 90 HP
The 75 and standard 90 use the 1.3 litre triple. They are smooth, strong and well suited to pontoons, bay boats and bowriders. The 90 HO uses the larger V4 for even more torque. A 90 HP Evinrude outboard motor for sale is one of our most requested sizes.
105 HP Jet
The E105DJL is the jet version of the V4 E-TEC, made for shallow, rocky rivers where a prop would not last. It needs a hull set up for a jet drive.
135 HP
The 135 uses a 2.6 litre V6, so it never feels strained. It suits heavy centre consoles, large pontoons and work boats that carry people and gear.
Tiller or Remote Steering?
Small Evinrude motors up to about 30 HP are often tiller steered, which keeps the boat simple and leaves more room aboard. From about 40 HP up, most boats use remote steering with a wheel, a control box and cables. Some models were offered both ways. Each listing shows the steering for that motor, and we confirm it with photos before you buy any Evinrude outboard motor for sale.
Rope Start or Electric Start?
Rope start motors need no battery, which is one less thing to go flat on a small boat. Electric start is easier for larger motors and for anyone who does not want to pull a cord, and it charges a battery for electronics. On E-TEC models the start is quick either way, because the injection system primes the engine for you.
Power Trim or Manual Tilt?
Power trim lets you change the motor angle from the helm while running, which improves speed, fuel use and ride. Manual tilt uses a pin on the bracket and is simpler and lighter. Most Evinrude outboard motor for sale listings from 40 HP up have power trim and tilt. On smaller motors it depends on the model code.
Repowering an Older Boat With an Evinrude
Many of our buyers are repowering a boat whose old motor has given up. Check that the transom is solid, measure its height for the shaft length and confirm the capacity plate ratings. Reuse controls and cables only if they are compatible with the new motor. If the old motor was a heavy four stroke, a lighter E-TEC can improve how the boat sits in the water. Tell us your boat and we will match a used Evinrude outboard motor for sale to it, including the controls and harness you need.
